Holier than thou . . . Patong Hill road in one of last year's leaks

Patong Hill Bus Rolls Back, Halts Traffic

Friday, July 23, 2010
PHUKET'S notorious Patong Hill road was blocked by an out-of-control bus around 7.30pm tonight.

A Phuketwan reader said it appeared the bus had been heading towards Phuket City from Patong and then gone backwards, swinging side-on to almost block the traffic going both ways.

A motorcycle protruded from under the rear of the bus. The reader reported that traffic was backed up heavily in both directions.

Police confirmed that the bus had had a brake problem. An officer said two motorcycles were damaged but nobody was injured.

Only the driver was on board the bus.

The incident took place on the incline above where the local authority has just installed a new water tunnel following a series of holes in the road attributed to fast-flowing water beneath the surface.

Problems with heavy vehicles failing to be able to make either the ascent or the descent are a regular fixture of the Phuket City-Patong Hill road, especially in bad weather.

Yes, Patong Hill in the first rain after some time is more like surfing on soap when you have to brake.

And will the bus company get punished for having an unroad worthy vehicle on the road ??

Of course not.

I have seen water trucks leaving a thin layer of water on otherwise dry and clean roads. Anyone who has taken a driving course can tell you this easily mixes with oil and makes the road even more slippery.

Maybe some day someone will crack down on all the trucks leaking large amounts of oil on the road when going up hill. The government needs to put a bounty on trucks leaking oil then the public and police will do something about this growing problem I can't tell you how many times I have had to adjust my line going up the hills to avoid a line of oil on the road.

Since the 'improvement' to the drain was carried out at a cost of B5m the surface has subsided a bit ( it obviously wasn't compacted as that would have cost another B1m!) this, combined with the bad camber of the road at that point will continue to make this area hazardous, especially as some vehicles seem to use the slight hill to sling shot up and gain momentum. Give other drivers a wide berth when going over this bit.
