The Italian man lies hurt in Patong after the golf club incident

Patong Assault on Tourist: Tout Expected to Surrender

Tuesday, October 25, 2011
PHUKET: The Phuket bar worker who slugged an Italian tourist over the head with a golf club has undertaken to surrender to police, a senior officer in the west coast nightlife outlet of Patong said today.

Colonel Kittipong Klaikeaw said that four people had already been interviewed over the assault, including the foreign owner of a bar in Soi Seadragon, a lane of bars that runs off Patong's popular night walking street, Soi Bangla.

The incident occurred about 4am on October 17

''The people we have interviewed say that the Italian man was drunk and was trying to get into a bar in Soi Seadragon,'' Colonel Kittipong said. ''The security people on the door thought he was far too drunk and turned him away.

''The man then threatened the security guards with a chair,'' the colonel said. ''He was advised by friends not to do it. But then he broke a bottle on the chair, and that's what triggered the assault.''

Colonel Kittipong said the identity of the man who used the golf club was known. He was not, as first thought, one of the security guards, but a tout.

The colonel said he understood that the Italian man, who needed stitches in a head wound and was admitted to the intensive care unit at a Phuket City hospital, was recovering and would be interviewed.

Now this is good news, the tout (identity known by police already) that used a golf club to injure an Italian tourist has undertaken to surrender to the Police ... just wonder how much this is going to cost the Italian ;-)

Finally, the truth comes out. The Italian guy was the aggressor and so he was in the wrong. He was extremely drunk and the bar owners rightly denied him entry to their property, for his own good and because he poses a risk to their property and patrons. If there was any justice, he would be prosecuted and do a few months in a Thai jail, but of course this will never happen. In 90% of cases of violence against tourists, it's the tourist who starts the situation going with aggressive behavior. Now I'm sure a lot of people will be outraged by me (as a foreigner) saying this, but you cannot accept the truth.

He was denied entrance to the club at 4am.....and the closing time is?? ...and this happened 8 days ago (??) and the tout might now pop along to the police station. Jolly decent of him. Looks like business as usual.

In the most i agree with you Andy, but I want to know why the man even had a golf club down Bangla road at 4am if it was not for the purpose of causing somebody harm. All too often we read about iron bars, baseball bats knives and now golf clubs being used as weapons. I have seen it all to often in the 8 years i have lived here when trouble breaks out there is a small element of touts down Bangla just waiting to dive in to beat someone up which more than often creates a far bigger problem. I am sick too of the obnoxious drunks but lets start getting the police to arrest them rather than some thug have a free for all with a golf club. Someone soon is going to get killed. That is not going to do our image any good especially with the bad although mostly unfair press we are getting at present. We have signs all over Patong saying its a drug free zone lets get a few more up stating anyone drunk and disorderly can and should be arrested.

So you seriously think that because somebody is drunk and aggressive that somehow makes it right for a tout to smash his head in with a golf club? It didn't hit you as strange that somebody would be carrying a golf club around in Soi Sea Dragon in the middle of the night? Maybe was planning to go the driving range straight after work, huh? people arming themselves is NOT ok no matter how drunk and stupid the italian man might have been. What you preach is called mob rule and does not belong in a civilised country. I guess you are also keen on public hangings and stonings without trial like they do in rural Pakistan or Afghanistan or somewhere like that. Nice.

Totally agree with andy, i've been coming to patong for years, the only trouble i've witnessed is drunks who have a few drinks and think they're back on the streets of a western city thinking they can take the world on. my mate was one of these drunks who when in pattaya kicked off with local thais and the police he ended up in a thai prison for 5 months and i can honestly say those 5 months in prison changed him for the better,so i agree with andy you cause disorder in a thai bar or street send them to prison, see what hard men they are then, respect thai culture and you won't get problems....
