THERE will be no flowers and probably not even a hug on Mothers' Day for Janjira Boonmak, 31, mother of three. She's under arrest, accused of couriering illegal drugs onto Phuket.
It was Khun Janjira's odd behavior that made police suspicious. Yesterday she and a friend, Chamaiporn Kewkaew, 31, rode a motorcyle through the checkpoint at Thachatchai, in north Phuket. The checkpoint is close to the bridge leading off Phuket to the mainland.
Ten minutes later, Khun Janjira rode the motorcycle back through the checkpoint, going in the opposite direction. Officers knew she wasn't from a local village, so they pulled her over for questioning.
They also opted to search the motorcycle. They found a pack of sanitary pads. According to police, Khun Janjira was quick to tell them that the pads had been ''used already.''
Officers checked and say they found 2000 ya bah methamphetamine pills secreted in the pack.
Khun Janjira told police that with Mother's Day looming and her husband already in jail, she had no money to care for her three children.
So she decided to make a drugs run so she could feed her family. Police asked a relative to pick up Khun Janjira's children after school yesterday.
Khun Chamaiporn denied all knowledge that Khun Janjira was carrying drugs. Police were making further inquiries about how a large quantity of drugs could be obtained within a short ride from Phuket.
