bangkokpost.com Beaches on Phuket and in other provinces have been demoted from four stars to three stars because of poor management of tourism and the environment, and degradation of natural resources. Only six beaches nationwide have earned a five-star rating on the Pollution Control Department's latest beach quality index. The PCD's survey of 233 beaches in 18 provinces, carried out last year, found many beaches have been damaged by pollution and other human activity. Beaches on Phuket gave cause for most concern, said Worasart Apaipong, PCD's deputy chief.
The department assessed 14 beaches on Phuket and awarded three stars to 13 of them. The other received two stars. Phuket's Patong and Rawai beaches were found to have an excessive amount of coliform bacteria in the sea water. Nai Han beach is flooded with garbage with an average of 2.23 kilogrammes of garbage for each 100 square metres. At Mai Khao beach, the garbage problem is little better -1.7 kilogrammes per square metre. Beach quality ratings are based on four major indicators: environmental protection, pollution management, natural resources preservation and tourism management.

If the condition of Phukets beaches were posted along the beachfront it might take care of the "drownings" problem. Warning: swimming here could be hazardous to your health!

Coliform bacteria usually is called fecal coliform as it is present in excrement. Is that all they tested for because there must be lots of other human pathogens, I would wager, from the smell of the sewage running directly into the ocean at Surin and Bang Tao.

I worked in Rawai and saw the little sewage truck come and suck out the tank at the little clinic. Strangely without too much time in between we saw it come back. We watched from our adjacent office and wondered where the truck had gone to offload that it could come back so quickly.........

This is disgusting!!!

I frequently exercise and run on Patong beach in the early morning hours right before sunrise...at this time, the beach often has people (both Thai and expats) hanging out ... still enjoying their night of partying and intoxication...Aside from witnessing an occasional couple or two fornicating on the sand, I see many people using the beach as their own personal toilet...doing both "number 1 and number 2"...right there on the shoreline in the shallow water....so this bacteria finding is of no surprise to me....It's just sickening that people are just too damn lazy to find a toilet.
