Lost in a drain, airbags helped save this Phuket driver

Limo, Car Plunge Into Phuket Drains: Chinese Couple Hurt

Wednesday, April 22, 2015
PHUKET: A Chinese couple whose limousine ran int a drain on the way to the airport and a car that plunged into a newly-constructed ditch highlighted the new peril on Phuket overnight.

The limo picked up the couple for their flight home about 11pm but they didn't make it to the airport.

While the driver emerged unscathed when the limo plunged off the road making a left turn off Thepkasattri Road into Thepkasattri-Nai Yang Road, the alternative route to the airport, the woman suffered facial injuries.

She and her husband, instead of being taken to catch their flight, were taken to Thalang Hospital for treatment.

More ditch devilry came at 8am today when a driver slewed off the road surface into a newly-dug drain near Simon Cabaret, on the coast road between Karon and Patong.

An airbag saved the driver but local authorities said the crash was a warning to motorists across Phuket to be wary of fresh drain construction that often occurs without warning signage.

The moral of this story is for someone somewhere to think maybe we could put up warning signs as even people walking and falling into one of the dangers would probably break their legs or even die. There must be little liability to local govt as they do not seem to worry. Imagine this in the USA there would be people hurting themselves in the drain to sue!

It would help if they had the sense to put up proper road work signs well before the work in progress - but they never do. I few palm tree branches does not cut it.

Poor Chinese tourist couple. Missing your flight is 1 thing, being hospitalized because the driver was not driving properly is 2!
Seeing the photos I wonder how the thai driver ended up like that.
Not with normal driving. Was the driver checked/tested on having a driving license and alcohol/drugs use?
Big question: who is responsible for medical care of the Chinese tourists and buy then new tickets to get home?

Yeah... once again "local authorities said the crash was a warning to motorists across Phuket to be wary of fresh drain construction that often occurs without warning signage". Heaven forbid these idiot officials should do anything about the ongoing problems... just warn people that the roads are deadly. Why is there never a change in policy that whenever a potential hazard is created, workers are required to set up barriers and warning lights/signs. The foolishness and incompetence never ceases to amaze me.

Let this be a warning to motorists who need to wary of construction without signage.. How about a warning to those doing the construction, to put the damn barriers and signage in place.

How out of touch do you have to be to allocate the blame that way.

There was another crash this morning on the same road near Simon Cabaret when a motorbike & minibus collided - the motorbike rider was taken away by ambulance. Drain works there have been ongoing for months without a lot of progress & there are no lights or cones, nothing stopping unwary.
