Police in Thailand fired tear gas and arrested dozens of anti-government protesters in Bangkok, in the largest public demonstration against Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra since she came to power last year.
The Pitak Siam rally was out-thought, out-gunned and doomed from the start - not to mention it attracted just two percent of the target turnout.
At least 10,000 protesters gathered, demonstrating against the government of Yingluck Shinawatra, the sister of the deposed former prime minister. The rally was organised by a group who accuse Ms Yingluck of being a puppet of her brother, Thaksin Shinawatra. At least seven police officers were reported wounded in clashes.
There was a brief confrontation at the Makkawan Bridge at 10.40am when supporters of anti-government Pitak Siam group tried to break through the police barricades to join the rally at the Royal Plaza. However, the route is prohibited from entering by anyone, according to the Internal Security Law enforced earlier. Police used tear gas to control the crowd. The clash ended shortly before noon.
The leader of the anti-government protest admitted to his ''loss to evil'' after calling off the rally in the evening. Retired General Boonlert Kaewprasit said he called off the protest because the number of participants was smaller than expected.
