Korean Investors Eye Phuket as Bangkok Floods Hit Business

Thursday, November 24, 2011
PHUKET: Korean investors who had been affected by the floods around Bangkok were now looking closely at moving to Phuket, Korean honorary consul Tossaporn Thepabutr said today.

He told a meeting of Phuket's honorary consuls with Phuket business leaders that he had been approached by Korean families looking to learn more about Phuket and its facilities.

''I've been approached by people looking to find out more about hospitals and schools,'' he said. ''These people already have investments in Thailand but are looking to move to Phuket now.''

He said the number of tourists was also likely to increase with three Thai Airways flights a week from Inchon and Bangkok Airways planning more from next year.

Three Korean airlines were operating on the route to Phuket as well, he said.

Koreans enjoyed Phuket's weather and the prices remained much better than alternatives closer to home.

The Korean Ambassador to Thailand is due to meet with Phuket Governor tri Augkaradacha tomorrow.

Brilliant. Just what Phuket needs to seal its fate, a few dozen giant Korean factories. Congratulations, the total destruction of the once beautiful and natural island of Phuket is almost complete.

What fate is that? You expect factories to be put on the beaches? Phuket does not exist only for benefit of of tourists. In fact tourism is a root cause of many of the bad aspects of life here (tuktuk ripoffs, messy beaches, etc). People live here also. For the past 10 years Phuket has gradually become less attractive as a holiday destination and more attractive (convenient) as a place to live with better shopping, schools, hospitals than alternative "unspoiled" locations. This would just be another step in that direction, giving local residents other employment options as well. There are still many undeveloped places to go live if that's what you want.
