Lifeguards are in place at Karon but swimmers need to be alert

Joggers Find Drowned Boy's Body at Karon

Tuesday, July 28, 2009
THE BODY of a 16 year old boy has been found at Karon beach by tourists going for an early morning run along the sands.

Pacharadai Kattapong disappeared on Sunday evening after going for a swim at the beach.

Five friends who worked with Khun Pacharadai, a painter, searched for him in vain and alerted authorities that he was missing.

Police Major Tapanapat Jatunapan said today that the boy's body, dressed in a pair of black shorts, washed up opposite the Movenpick Resort at 6.30am.

His body showed no wounds and cause of death was attributed drowning.

The family was taking the body back to Samodsakorn province, south of Bangkok, this afternoon.

Six people have been reported as drownings on Karon beach so far this year, with the total for the whole island up to July 1 numbering at least 30.

So-called ''undertows'' have been falsely reported as a cause of swimmers getting into difficulty in the water.

The real cause is not swimmers being pulled under, but rip currents that drag them out to sea unexpectedly.

Fighting back against the current is the worst possible thing a swimmer can do. It usually leads to panic and a rapid death.

The expert advice is not to battle the rip, but to float out with it until the flow ceases pulling, then swim across the beach to safety.
