The job wanted thief is nabbed by police in Phuket City last night

Job Wanted Applicant Stole From 10 Phuket Resorts, Say Patong Police

Wednesday, September 25, 2013
PHUKET: Resort managers should be wary of job seekers on Phuket after the arrest last night of a man who admitted to stealing from at least 10 island resorts.

''He would apply for any job that was going,'' the Superintendent of Kathu Police Station, Colonel Jirapat Palchanaphan, said today after the arrest of Theerawat ''Lek'' Yodying, 29, from Trang.

''Once he had the chance to look over a resort, he would steal from rooms, specialising in mobile telephones and iPads.''

Khun Lek was nabbed by police about 8pm last night as he partied with a woman at a club in the Phuket City region, Colonel Jirapat said.

Later he confessed and explained his technique, adding that mobile telephones and iPad were easily converted into cash.

Khun Lek spent the money on his family and nights out and is not expected to be looking for a job for a little while.

"mobile telephones and iPad were easily converted into cash."

But of course. Who cares if what they are buying so cheaply is stolen property?

Not the majority of tech shops in Phuket, that's for sure. They live off stolen goods.

Is the police doing a follow up on this "adding that mobile telephones and iPad were easily converted into cash."
Fencing is a serious crime under Thai law, too, isn't it?

I notice that most Thais do not remain silent upon their arrest but rather spill all the beans on accomplices...and in this case, modus operandi.

Is it due to an assurance of lesser punishment or a cultural thing?

I have to compliment the Thai culture when it comes to theft. We experienced no issues. A very pleasant change from Latin American and Caribe destinations we frequent.

Cheers

Editor Comment:

Indeed. Having something stolen in Thailand is a rarity for tourists. People pride themselves on their honesty.
