Uphold the law: Soldiers patrol Patong beach as Phuket enforces regulations

Do Your Job or Be Sacked: Army Chief Tells Phuket Mayors, Police to Impose Laws Without Compromise

Thursday, July 17, 2014
PHUKET: Compromise will no longer be applied as Phuket begins the Era of Enforcement, Vice Governor Jamleran Tipayapongtadav told a meeting yesterday.

His words were reinforced by the Army's Major General Somchai Ponatong, now based on Phuket, who said even the governor will have to do his job or be replaced by someone who can do it.

With about 40 soldiers and police conducting a task force sweep through taxi and tuk-tuk drivers in Patong the previous night, the gathering at the Phuket Land Transport office in Phuket City was the clearest indication yet that the Army also aims to do its job.

Vice Governor Jamleran, who in the past has frequently tried to trigger action by local councils, said: ''On Phuket, we have compromised a lot. Not any more.

''From now on, we must all follow the law and make sure others follow the law.''

Earlier in the week, Phuket's police and task force commander, Major General Praveen Pongsirin, urged everyone on Phuket to maintain the beach clearances and the push against outlaw taxi and tuk-tuk drivers by reporting wrong-doers at every opportunity.

His message was in sync with the comments of Major General Somchai yesterday. He told the district chiefs, mayors and police superintendents at the meeting: ''Phuket is a beautiful island and many people want to come here. Our task is to make sure the island functions the way that it should.

''Many governors and ministers have failed to resolve Phuket's issues. But together, we can do it if the will is there.''

He said the Army intervened on Phuket on May 25 - just three days after the coup in Bangkok put the military in charge of Thailand - to evaluate the island's administration and bureaucracy.

More and more, it appears that Phuket is being used as a role model for the entire country, much along the lines suggested repeatedly by Phuketwan to curb corruption and maximise Phuket's future as a tropical island tourist destination with sustainable natural attributes.

""If you are not working, we will seek a new person for your job,'' Major General Somchai said. ''If the governor doesn't do his job, we will be looking for a new governor.

''If the mayor doesn't do his or her job, we will be looking for a new mayor. If the police commander doesn't do his job, he will be moved and replaced. We are looking for people who have the ability to be effective.''

Among the attributes that administrators needed were the following, Major General Somchai said:

.. Don't be two-faced

.. Apply the same standards

.. Everybody must do their job

.. Use law enforcement. Do not encourage people to take the law into their own hands.

Many people on Phuket believe that life will soon return ''to normal,'' that the beach sunbeds will return, that the taxi drivers will be back in power, and that corruption will flourish again.

But it now appears as though the Army is not going anywhere in a hurry.

Yes, well said!
Many people worry a lot on what will happen if the Army hands back the power to the police as 'normal and simple' people do not trust the police for well known reasons.
That said, many people do not trust the Army either, but they trust General Prayuth.
Hope he will stay a long time in power, clean the mess all over Thailand and set up new systems, laws and reform/change the educational system, police and court system for a sustainable future of Thailand.
Thank you General Prayuth!

I agree with him, apart from the part that says if they are not doing their job they will be moved and replaced.

This should be changed to SACKED and not employed by the government again.

But otherwise keep up the good work!

Excellent. Phuket has been a rogue island for too long. Like a neglected child turned into a delinquent. Time for some tough-love. Go go go General Praveen. I got your number in my phone too! Thank you!

The Royal Thai Defence forces are doing a wonderfull job. But we, the people at home, read daily about Government officials, ( land offices, Mayors, other influencial people, illigal(?)shops in Phuket airport). Many 'charges' are 'flying over', sounds impressive, but when are these people now showing up in Court, get convicted and do their prison time? When a young thai boy be trapped with a few grams of soft drugs he sitts in no time in prison for a few years. Where is the Justice now regarding all this high thai people who did make the Phuket situation rotten and lawless?

This sounds Fantastic what the Army is doing. I hope they also target some infrastructure problems on Phuket such as excessive Trash problem and the resorts sewerage problem.
I know there was talk about using Tuk Tuk for public transportation but I really hope they do as in Pattaya and have the Pick up Truck with bench seats that Circles Beach rd. and the street that parallels it. That would be very helpful to all.

'Small' testcase. When are the bars on Patak road Chalong, close to Patak Villa area ( owned by police officers, 1 police officer killed by accident around 4am a waitres of a competitive bar) forced to respect the by LAW set closing time, Army? Why are these bars open till 4, 5 am in the morning? just 500 metres from Chalong police station? Keeping us out of our proper night rest as we have to wake up at 7am to go to our normal day time jobs? Who is now still influencial to keep all these bars open the whole night? Where is the law enforcement?

A shame this didn't happen years ago before the rot set in. Long may the Army continue to reform Phuket. Hopefully their actions will at some point see some serious court cases and convictions for the 'men of influence' who sought to line their pockets at the expense of others and the natural beauty of the island.

OK. When will the sacking begin. I drove Patong beach road today just after 12 PM and there were 73 Tuk Tuks parked between Ruamchai (street by Holiday Inn) and Bangla. 73 Tuk Tuks parked in 700 meters!!! Did the police abandon the area when the Army went over to the east coast? The police on the streets of Patong are not doing their job and per this news article are to be sacked. Who is brave enough? We shall see.

This is like a breath of fresh air ,about time these people who have been cruising along for years in most cases not doing the job they are employed and or elected for ,bring in people who aren't afraid of the crooks who run the taxis or the jet ski scam artists people with the ability to carry through a plan without dithering or doing the usual tactic of appeasing these thugs rather than having a confrontation .
Major general you and your men are doing a great job please keep up the good work because this lot are just waiting for you to leave so it'll be back to the old routine again they've been doing it for years especially in patong.

I am very surprised by this article because today jetskis were on the beach and in the sea while the police of the Bangla Road station saw it. They did not intervene. Against by a small Thai that sold glasses had to go to the post of Bangla Road. Where is the justice and who does or does not work?

There has been no decision made yet about the future of the jet-skis.

Maj General Somchai's comments, love it

.. Don't be two-faced

.. Apply the same standards

.. Everybody must do their job

.. Use law enforcement. Do not encourage people to take the law into their own hands.

So looking forward to when this will actually start. Hopefully before the end of the year.
