In a dark corner of the airport car park, Phuket tourists meet their minivan

Immigration Officer Seeks Taxi Customers

Monday, November 25, 2013
PHUKET: At least one Immigration officer working at Phuket International Airport is seeking to earn extra money as an illegal taxi driver.

Tourists and expats have complained about Phuket's taxi drivers seeking fares inside the no-go area at the airport as passengers pick up their luggage from the carousels.

The Immigration officer went one better last night.

He propositioned two Phuketwan journalists who had just arrived on Phuket on a flight from Singapore before they had been processed by Immigration and officially arrived on Phuket.

The man, dressed in civilian clothes but wearing an Immigration pass around his neck, approached and spoke to the two journalists as they walked across Phuket's arrivals hall towards the Immigration counter.

Their arrivals cards and passports were still in their hands.

''Are you a Thai? Do you need a taxi to get back to Phuket Town?'' the officer said to one of the journalists.

''I have just finished my shift. I am going into Phuket Town. Where are you going to stay?''

The journalists were shocked and kept moving towards the Immigration counter. Another officer, dressed in uniform, was a couple of paces behind the officer dressed in civilian clothes.

''Do you have a taxi?'' he asked. The journalists kept walking.

Had the officer in civvies known the pair he was talking to were journalists, he may not have said anything.

Airports of Thailand, which manages Phuket airport, has announced its intention to sort out the problems with taxis, both legal and illegal.

Progress has been made. There's greater efficiency at the Immigration desk, both departing and arriving.

But from the approach made by the immigration officer to two Phuketwan journalists, it's plain that some people at Phuket's airport have yet to learn that opportunism now is frowned upon.

In the airport car park, signs of the bad old days also linger.

Instead of being picked up straight away on exiting the airport, large numbers of Russian tourists are still forced to march to a remote corner of the car park to board their minivans.

Ah, enterprise. No heavy hand. Just end of shift and I'm driving down there so let's see if I can pick up a few Baht from others who are going. Give them a better deal than a taxi or van too. Leaving now!

If law and order ruled on Phuket, this particular agent would be fired and criminal charges filed.

Despite the blatancy of his actions, I'm betting on no disciplinary action coming down on him.

So being journalists, did they get the name of the guy with the Pass holder on his neck and then report it to the "powers that be" such as the DSI etc for them breaking the law?
As you know, if you don't report a crime, then therefore it isn't recorded and no one can do anything about crimes that are not reported.

Editor Comment:

Coming from you, TBS, who once told us that you knew who was to blame for all the second-grade security cameras in Patong, that's a bit of a joke. Do you remember? You refused to say more. We asked you for details. You refused to follow up. Yet your comments often urge others to do the things you lack the courage to do.

This makes complete sense. Phuket Taxi and tuk tuk operators make some of the highest wages in Thailand. (I say operators because a great many of them are not owned by the drivers but belong to a fleet) The single fare this guy gets likely triples his daily pay. I was looking at a fare board in southern Patong yesterday and it said 400B to Kata. That is a distance of 8km. That is on par with some of the most expensive taxi's in the world. An 8km taxi ride in San Francisco, for example, would be the equivalent of 450B. New York; 415B. In a Bangkok metered taxi it would cost 60B.

1. experience at the airport:
immigration officer ask me for 500 thb for 1 day overstay and they guy who stamps my passport took the money and put it in his trousers.
2. experience: immigration officer ask me to buy him a wiskey at the dutyfree shop.
3. experience: immigration officer ask my girlfriend to buy him a wiskey at the duty free shop and gave her the money. she did it and he got a bottle. happy smile
4.5.6.7.8.9 experiences to long to list all...
should i start to list all my bad taxi experiences ? (ok i living 9 years here)
i did stop 7 times at the famous travel office when i took a airport taxi. last time 2 weeks ago. just to scratch on the surface i list that. i could write a book and it is a shame how taxi guys destroys phuket and the thailand image. it is really time to get ride of them but the problem is in bangkok. there will be a change and now no pressure anymore for those guys in phuket. and no new goverment wants to deal with the issue first. so we are stuck with this guys. that`s the reality and everybody who is dreaming for a bangkok style taxi system is in my eyes a dreamer.

Can anyone explain to me why it is almost impossible to find an empty parking space at Phuket Airport? 70% of all the cars there have taxi signs on them. Why is that so? Can't they wait somewhere else?

It's not only immigration officers. You would be surprised how many police officers are working part-time as taxi and tuk-tuk drivers.

Anyone knows, how much a immigration officers wages is?
Knowing, a couples of years ago, the official pay for a navy seal high officer was just under 20k.
Comparing that, with the 'normal' immigration officer: f course he needs additional income. How he should pay the bills? After paying the car and gas for it?
But this story reminds me a bit of the story of some female journalist, whom paid entry fee to a 'pink pong show'.
But nice stories, keep up the good work, PW
