Kathu Director Veera Kerdsirimongkol at the meeting about the hilltop land

Illegal Development on Phuket Hill May Become Public Viewpoint

Thursday, June 6, 2013
PHUKET: A large piece of illegal land 250 metres high on a Phuket hill may become a viewpoint, Phuket officials believe.

Concrete foundations had already been poured on the property, high up on the Patong west coast side of Nakkerd Hill, said the Director of Kathu District, Veera Kerdsirimongkol.

The scale of the illegal development was revealed when officials raided the property - with magnificent views out over Phuket - on May 15.

Patong Council officials, Forests Department officials and the Land Titles Office met with Khun Veera this week to decide the fate of the 35 rai patch.

GPS satellite imagery helped them to conclude that the nor sor sam land title had ''flown'' further up the hill.

The paperwork will now be taken to Patong police so a prosecution can begin against the ''owner'' of the land title.

Because the project is 60 percent complete, officials believe they may be better off opening the viewpoint to the public so the revenue goes to the people rather than undergoing costly demolition work.

Why could the owner not be made to pay for the demolition ?

Yes, lets not replant the devastating construction with trees. Lets build a road and make more people encroach on the land and ruin it! Lovely, more crappy tourist spots.

Great Thinking!

Surely the land "owner" should be made to restore the site back to its original state, this would act as a warning to other "owners" that they cannot get away with this. Phuket is losing its natural beauty on a daily basis - for future generations we need to maintain it.

The revenue goes to the people? Which people? Whom do I have to "ask" to open a restaurant?

Khun Veera strikes again- keep up the good work. maybe peeps should continue to support him rather than making sarcastic comments about his efforts. This new Sherriff in town needs all the encouragement he can get.
