When Irishman Michael Merry, 55, was pestered by a ladyboy at 3am today in Pattaya's walking street, he pushed her away.
On reflection, that was probably a heelish thing to do.
Offended at being repulsed so bluntly, Wichai Sripalang, 24, slipped off a shoe and, instead of sipping champagne from it, hammered the heel.
The result? Some eye-catching wounds for Mr Merry and a pending fine for Khun Wichai.
Hitting someone on the head with a shoe is a sign of extreme disrespect and contempt in Thailand.
It is not unusual to see the ladies (and not-so-ladies) of the night do to foreigners quite frequently.
Just another way to show where foreigners rank in the eyes of some locals.
It can be quite funny too. Many years ago a bar girl attacked my friend with a shoe but he grabbed it and threw it on the roof of a building on Soi Sensabai. She was left hopping along with one shoe and the action drew quite a few applauds.
