The crowd at Phuket airport during yesterday's delays and diversions

Phuket Haze Improves: Tourist Arrivals Lift

Friday, October 9, 2015
PHUKET: The haze over Phuket appeared to be improving rapidly today - and latest figures from Phuket International Airport indicate tourism is likely to suffer no long-term effects.

A wind change led to the haze reducing to a health hazard level of just 86 at 6am, a Phuket-based meteorologist reported, with the chances of rain at 40 percent today.

The haze has covered the Andaman holiday coast but the surgical masks will be coming off if readings continue to decline tomorrow.

Latest Airports of Thailand figures for Phuket show that the number of passengers through the island's airport increased 13.63 percent from January to September over last year.

The monthly tally for September reached 860,114 travellers coming and going by air to Phuket. International arrivals and departures outnumbered domestic but the domestic tally was up 17.47 percent on last year compared to 9.88 percent for international.

With the Chinese Golden Week holiday followed by the Vegetarian Festival in October, the month is likely to be a good one for tourist numbers.

The Phuket airport tallies include both arrivals and departures.
