RANONG: A street corner in Ranong, north of Phuket on the border with Burma, packs with people whenever a local woman decides it's time to make merit.
The woman, who prefers to stay anonymous, organises a giveaway of water and noodles by donating 50,000 baht at a time.
Her second giveaway earlier this month instantly attracted hundreds of people, Thais and Burmese, who were the beneficiaries of her largesse.
The process happens like this: the operation is set up on the street corner, no far from Ranong's port, where Phuket visa runners are ferried to Burma each day to have their passports stamped.
Within minutes, a crowd gathers, and police are posted to control the crowd and the traffic. Even if its pouring with rain, hundreds turn out to collect the unexpected bonus.
Some even go once then return to the end of the queue to gain a second armful of goodies. Ranong, with its mix of nationalities, has seen the woman give away 100,000 baht in water and noodles so far.
