Cyril Chausse, latest expat victim of a spate of deadly crashes on Phuket

French Expat Killed in Spate of Phuket Collisions

Thursday, March 25, 2010
A FRENCH expat resident is among at least five people who have died on Phuket's southern roads in the past three days.

Cyril Chausse, 40, was killed early this morning when his motorcycle collided with a motorcycle being ridden by Napatphon Hongchumpair, 25, in Rawai.

Police said Khun Napatphon had just finished work soon after 4am and turned right from Soi Suksan into the oncoming traffic on the main Visit Road in Moo 4.

Both men were killed in the smash.

A Thai woman, riding pillion on Mr Chausse's motorcycle, remains in a critical condition in intensive care at Vachira Hospital in Phuket City. The bodies of both men are in the morgue at the hospital.

The French Embassy in Bangkok confirmed Mr Chausse's death but declined to give further information.

This morning's wrong-way collision came after a triple tragedy at 3.48am on Tuesday when a pickup and a motorcycle collided on Chao Fa East Road, and three Thai riders were killed at the scene.

The three dead were young women, aged 18 to 25, returning from a night out.

A British man was among six people believed to have died in one day on Phuket's roads during February. The Public Health Department, which usually updates figures early each month, is still compiling details for February

There were 157 road deaths on Phuket in 2009, along with thousands of injuries. Most involved motorcycles.

Were the riders ALL wearing crash helmets or, as I would suspect, not? Plus their road skills must be questioned.

Again needless deaths, law for helmets and road worthy motorbikes, skills (how to ride a bike responsibly) are just few of the things that have to improve on Phuket's roads. Again Phuket will pay the price, the tourists will stop coming. There are many safer places. Sort the road issue out.

I guess they were at the illegal nightclubs that are all open until 5 or 6 in the morning. At 4.30am it is amazing how many drunks are driving around Rawai .

Have to agree with Lord Jim. Recently been up early mornings to take photos and its amazing how many drunk people there are driving around at 5 or 6 in the morning in Rawai

Had to help one guy up who fell off his bike on a straight bit of road. Tried to persuade him otherwise but he got back on and drove off

I suspect 157 fatalities in 2009 is incorrect and that the actual death rate is much higher.

Editor: You can suspect if you wish but the official figure is 157. Hospitals are not usually inclined to be involved in conspiracies.

"The bodies of both men are in the morgue at the hospital."

"The three dead were young women, aged 18 to 25, returning from a night out."

Let me guess.... none of them were wearing a helmet? Riding the wrong way down a road? No working front light on the bike, or a basket full of stuff blocking the beam? Had a few bevvies? Talking on a mobile whilst riding?

This is life on the roads in Thailand.....the Biker form of Darwinism.

Dare I repeat myself after being told if it bothers me here in Phuket, go home !! When are the authorities going to do something to stop all these tragic deaths ?

I spend two months of the year in Phuket and have noticed that in one four day period we witnessed five motorbike accidents, one fatal.

Always young 18/30 from all parts of the world but mainly Italian and French. Sorry but they are crazy. and should be banned from hiring 500cc scooters.

Or hit em where it hurts with big fines. We have a name for motorbike riders like these in the UK, we call them "Donors" which gives a whole new meaning to giving your heart to a Thai.
"Maybe a good advertising campaign???"
