PHUKET: A bus laden with Thai football fans travelling to a Premier League game has overturned, killing seven people and injuring more than 40.
The tragedy, however, will not prevent the game between Buriram PEA and Chiangrai United taking place, officials said.
The crash came at 7.30 am in Lopburi province, not far from Bangkok, as the fans from Chiangrai headed to Buriram.
Police said a 10-wheel truck turned right in front of the bus, which appeared to be going too fast.
The bus had been on the road for about 12 hours.
Both teams play in the Premier League, one level above Division One, in which FC Phuket plays. Phuket fans often take to the road in similar long-distance trips to away games.
An important provincial official, Supot Pakdeesan, 44, permanent secretary of the Mea Far Luang District in Chiang Rai, was among the dead.
Killed with Khun Supot were Abhisit Jaikar, 27, Jamrat Duangthia, 43, Athipong Harnwanit, 27, Sukanya Fujai, 32, and Thinnakorn Srirab who died in the hospital. One person has yet to be identified.
