Five dolphins are now on Phuket in readiness for the opening

Five Dolphins, Two Seals Ready for Dolphinarium

Monday, October 19, 2015
PHUKET: Five dolphins and two seals have already been flown in and are on Phuket being trained in readiness for the opening of the much-criticised Dolphinarium, officials confirmed today.

''The dolphins and seals were flown to Phuket and arrived on October 7,'' said Pisanu Na Anan, of the Phuket Fisheries Department.

''They are due to be inspected by marine veterinarians and then, once that paperwork is complete, the performances can begin.''

The Russian operators of the Dolphinarium have overcome all obstacles to the venue but not been able to counter local criticism over the keeping of dolphins in captivity.

A large group among the expat residents of the island, local schools and universities and wildlife advocates throughout Thailand have voiced opposition to holding dolphins in pools for entertainment.

The dolphins and seals are believed to have already been trained in the Ukraine, where the Russian business operators already have a venue.

Although dolphins are still performing at theme parks all over the world, audiences are reported to be falling.

Audiences at circuses disappeared once people realised the cruelty of constant confinement for creatures used to roaming free. Even zoos these days have to emphasise their work in preserving species to attract visitors.

Most of the protesters over the Phuket Dolphinarium have made the point that it's difficult to imagine dolphins being well looked after in small pools. The doors of the Dolphinarium have so far been closed to the island media.

Chinese are expected to make up the audiences on Phuket, despite the opposition of local and national tourism-related organisations to the importation of the dolphins.

Phuket has a long tradition of appreciating dolphins, with Loma Park in Patong named in their honor and a large statue at a landmark roundabout erected recently that represents dolphins jumping.

Those to blame are Phuket authorities for granted this circus to open. Money talked again! Personally I will never set a foot there and will advise my entourage to boycott.

I'm not sure the Phuket authorities are to blame. Phuket is part of Thailand after all and if the owners of the dolphinarium adhere to national animal welfare laws then "Phuket" can't really be blamed

the Phuket Authorities may not be wholly blamed but somebody on Phuket issued permits(?) and such so they were aware of the buildings use.

From memory, the people who approve buildings have no control over usage, jerry. Plainly, there are no laws against this usage anyway.

I guess we can assume that none of these indignant protesters have never eaten, utilized or consumed animal products?
.-Never taken the kids to a zoo, rode an elephant?
-Never eaten battery chicken or eggs, farmed fish or worn leather or other animal skins?
-Never possessed a house on land cleared depriving natural habitat?
-Never owned a house built with lumber from cleared land depriving natural habitat?
Never eaten vegetables etc from cleared land depriving natural habitat?
Never used perfumes that use substances that originate from animals?
Need I go on?
Throughout history man has used and abused animals. It is what it is!!

You are drawing a very long bow, david - one with a broken string. It may have escaped your attention so far during your life, but nobody is perfect. For you to draw together so many issues and then to insist that whoever opposes the dolphinarium also has to abide by your list is, if I might say so, extremely absurd. Individuals make choices about a whole range of issues concerning animals. Most intelligent people do not need to be vegetarians to understand the cruelty of confinement. Abuse of animals need not go on, david, but you do sound as if you don't want it to ever end.

If the planned activity is not unlawful, then Phuket authorities can't refuse to issue permits on some moral grounds. They must (of course) work without involving personal feelings or prejudice

Much of what modern man now utilizes includes mined minerals. Destroying habitat both animal and human through pollution. How many of the indignant ???protesters??? would be prepared to give up their I phones or vehicles one wonders?

Ed: It will go on with or without our comments..not within anyone's power to stop it.Think protests are just hypocrisy, perhaps naivety or ignorance.

Far from it, david. It's possible to understand why it's wrong to keep dolphins in captivity, without extending that issue to the other issues you seem to think are all related. They aren't. Ending cruelty to dolphins is the only aim of these protesters. That seems to me to be a worthwhile aim. Hypocrisy, naivety and ignorance have nothing to do with it.

Okay so the dolphins and seals are captive..methinks perhaps they may be better off than many humans in this shite world??

It not so bad all the time, david. The world has its moments. Best not to forget the good things. The fisherman rescuing the Norwegian tourists, for example. Not so shite.

Better of a few Russians in Dolphin suites and give the spectators box jellyfish in a plastic buckets to feed them with, should see a lively performance

These animals were not put on Earth so man can capture them, sometimes killing other family members in the process. Feed them dead fish and force them to perform for food! And all this for people who think its funny. Captivity kills. These animals belong in the oceans and not making money for people while living their lives in a small poon.
