The bus crashed into a wall and then a pole at the base of Patong Hill

VIDEO Fatal Phuket Bus Crash Driver Says Brakes Failed on Way to Patong from Airport

Sunday, December 29, 2013
PHUKET: A bus carrying Russian tourists from Phuket International Airport to their Patong resorts today crashed down a steep hill into other vehicles, killing two people and injuring 26.

Seven of the injured remained in Patong Hospital tonight as Phuket police began investigating yet another serious crash in which the driver said he lost control when the brakes failed.

Five cars and pickups and two motorcycles were struck or sideswiped as the bus careened down Patong Hill to crash into a concrete wall and a power pole outside a Buddhist temple.

A female Thai guide on board the tourist took the full force of the crash into the wall and was killed. She was Phannthida Jaruwat, 40. In an earlier report she was thought to be Russian.

A Thai man was crushed in the driver's seat of his vehicle as the bus rolled through. He was Kanrat Kajornjid, 55.

The chaos as the bus plummeted down the hill about 3pm, crunching into other vehicles and hurling them aside, can only be imagined, along with the screams and the noise.

The fatalities cast a pall over New Year on the holiday island, where Phuket Governor Maitree Intrusud had been hoping for a 'Seven Days of Danger' safety campaign free from deaths.

Nine fatalities were recorded in the same period on Phuket last year and today the toll stood at four, two deaths from the bus crash and two motorcyclists who died in separate crashes earlier today.

The Russians injured in the crash were listed as follows: Miss Arakelyan Luski, 52; Mr.Basov Sov Sergey, 29; Mrs. Deckova Elena, 28; Mr. Alekxandra Lobatyuk, 22; Miss. Gerasimova Anrstaia, 29; Ms.Polina Kolomrzov; Mr.Rolia Philipova; Mr. Alekxandra Lobatyuk; Ms.Sorokina Natalta; Mr. Arakelian Edvard; Ms. Gerasimove Anastasia; Mr. Kasatkin Andrey; Miss. Rosova Krtsoan.

The injured Thais - including the bus driver Chanchai Nuisanga - were; Kantawat Jenjalernphan, 11; Mr Somsit Sangjan; Miss Yuwadee Seapao; Mr. Sompong Setwatcharanit; Ms Sujidtra Jenjalernphan; Mr Somsak Setwatcharanit; Miss Somsuk Seaaew; Miss Patthama Sangjan; Natthapa Jenjalernphan; Miss Aphinya Setwatcharanit,

Various crackdowns have been promised following bus crashes down the same steep stretch of hill but vehicles that appear to be poorly maintained continue to leave passengers dead or injured.

The two dead from motorcycle crashes earlier today were a Thai-Italian Robert Morano. 21, killed in Kathu, and Sylvain Wacquez, 26, from France, who died when his motorcycle crashed with a car being driven by Ukrainian Alla Malyshenko, 27.

Watched a video... Ir more looks like classic driving downhill with macho-style too high speed...
Actually, there is no realistic option to provide for safety of buses, giving a state standard of regularity of mandatory technical checks and quality of those checks - that influence further on non-mandatory checks too.

Enough brake failures happen here for brake check station near the top of the hill , brakes faded to nothing because of the speed I was doing when I applied them be more believable.

Every hill here is dangerous, but I am happy at this time of the year to see more police checks on the roads. They should be there more often, not only at the end of the year.

Slickmelb, we were told by local authorities, there would be a police check point, to check for the mechanical safety of buses and trucks, before they would be allowed to go up Patong hill, from the Kathu side. This seems as though it's another case of words with no action, in other words, lies and deceit, something that seems to happen far too often. Only wish I could find the article that mentioned the "checks."

@ Sky. agreed, why? the female Guide that was killed instantly should have time to avoid that buy hearing the driver saying, F...ck the breaks not working, hide backwards in the bus. yet he has to drive as safe as possible.. but she didnt have any time to hide... he was driving to irresponsible and in the last second the accidents appeared... yes Ed its guesswork but also is saying its a break failure... even tho its the driver saying it..

I've watched this video a few times over and this driver literally couldn't have hit more vehicles if he had tried. The driving in phuket is unbelievably bad.
