smh.com.au Passengers on board a Qantas Boeing 747-400 jumbo that made an emergency landing in Singapore overnight reported hearing an explosion and seeing flames on the one of the engines minutes after takeoff. ''It was pretty scary,'' said Swedish tourist Lisa Ogden, 28. ''An engine on the wing exploded. ''

theaustralian.com.au The Qantas Boeing 747 with Rolls-Royce engines and 412 passengers was forced to return to the island state one hour and four minutes after take-off. The incident occurred one day after a Qantas Airbus A380, also Sydney-bound, returned to the same point of departure after one of its four Rolls-Royce engines caught fire.

csmonitor.com Indonesian authorities say the Merapi volcano had nothing to do with Thursday's Qantas A380 engine emergency. But ash clouds from Indonesia and elsewhere have been a hazard to aviation before.

smh.com.au Travellers could bear the brunt of higher international fares if Qantas is forced to ground its A380 fleet for weeks because of the reduction in seat capacity. As Qantas scrambled to accommodate 1000 stranded passengers and find extra aircraft to operate on its international routes, sharemarket analysts estimated the grounding of the A380s could cost the airline as much as $20 million a week in lost revenue.

Combating AIDS has some astonishing barriers in Thailand.

The sister of my ex GF has HIV. She has known this for over 2 years but continues to have unprotected sex without telling the men she procures. Everyone in the family knows this too but nobody says or does anything to stop her.

When I found out, I tried to reason with my GF, her sister and the family. My GF understood and tried to help but addressing the issue turned the whole family against me with very nasty repercussions.

As a last recourse I went to speak to the Police. They basically told me to bugger off since it's not their business.

She continues to ply her freelance sex trade in Phuket unabated and unfazed.

@ chris. you should be posting her pic on forums. you have tried to talk sense/reasoning with her and her family. posting her photo and workplace i now think is not invading her right to privacy. she is/can be infecting others which is wrong. whether her customers wear a condom or not.

It's a huge issue, and I'm not sure that posting photos on social media actually addresses the problem. The Public Health Department oversees these kinds of health crises and must have had experience in similar cases. I'd call them in straight away.

gravatar

editor... so in the mean time. she is out an about possibly infecting others while the thai public health department decides whether they sort the problem out or not. even if they have been contacted what will they do? the poster already has tried to reason with her and the family and getting know where.

Everyone seeking sex for cash is obliged to take precautions for their own safety. It's their responsibility, not yours. There is a system in place: Chris needs to use it. Sticking up ''Wanted'' posters is best left to lynch mobs.

gravatar

editor not being so one sided against the thai girl. obviously she was infected by another person foreigner/thai and should be held accountable as well if knowingly going around infecting others. she needs to be off the streets and getting help. yes this is a huge problem.

Posted by john s on November 6, 2010 11:53

Editor Comment:

The whole system needs to be improved. Scapegoating individuals is not the answer.

gravatar

editor.. you are ok with someone knowingly infected with HIV going around and possibly infecting others knowingly having HIV. protecting others is not a lynch mob/scapegoating when this person as no morals. this has nothing to do with sex for cash. i don't know and don't care if this is unlawful or not in thailand. what i do know and anyone that has any morals knows it is wrong. if anything you should be putting her picture up to protect others. i am wondering what morals you have.

Posted by john s on November 6, 2010 12:20

Editor Comment:

That's not what I said. Your ''morals'' are questionable because you propose a vigilante mob solution. There is a process in place for dealing with this kind of problem. Left to your kind of justice, indiscriminate accusations will be made all over the Internet. Give it a little thought and you will perhaps begin to realise that you are creating a bigger problem. If you give it a little thought and don't understand . . . then you have a problem.

really editor what is worse??

Editor Comment:

Drugs or sex? Which is more evil? Media Watcher, you need help.

You've lost the plot, John. Please see if you can find it somewhere.

editor. so you are ok with her possibly infecting others knowingly?

Posted by john s on November 6, 2010 12:40

Editor Comment:

You are attempting to put words into my mouth. You don't have a case for your crazy suggestion, John.

If you want to pursue it, set up your own site. Put a headline up: ''These people have HIV and could infect others.'' See how long it lasts.

People coming here as sex tourists should know the risks involved with unprotected sex. For those that 'buy' sex then it is caveat emptor, they probably know that but then the alcohol fuzzes their brain. Same the world over.

No good reporting one woman to the police when there might be a thousand others out there. If she works in a bar tell the bar owner, if she is freelance point her out to a social worker who can take the matter further.

Maybe now is the time for the rest of Thailand to stand up and send some instant noodle relief to Phuket.

In Europe you get imprisoned for having sex without telling about your HIV positive status. It is not necessary to actually infect someone. I think it is great from Chris to tell the story, so everyone going into this redlight zones know, they may play Russian roulette.

And if the Thai police thinks, it is a private matter, maybe afraid of loosing streams of revenue for... the community... they should think again. Jetski, Tuktuk, is a little nuisance compared against leaving HIV bombs knowingly on the street.

Super bad PR.

People sound surprised that a prostitute who doesn't use protection has HIV, I'm sure a large proportion of women who have sex for money and who don't use condoms all the time will have HIV or other STD's.
