More Drunks Are Causing Trouble on Phuket, Say Police
By Phuketwan Reporter Monday, September 19, 2011
PHUKET: Drunken Western tourists are creating more problems than ever on Phuket, especially in Patong, say local police.
More officers and volunteers are finding themselves settling minor altercations in Phuket's west coast nightlife capital, consuming the time and energy of under-resourced authorities.
Pictured above are two police who were called to settle a dispute betwen a British man and a woman last night.
The officers mediated a settlement, and the drunk went on his way into the night.

For some reason this article did not surprise me. Of course I believe that if you were to change the location it could have been written for Pattaya and other areas too.
People, please enjoy yourselves but to not over indulge to the point of causing problems.

And the world is round....
How is this news? Drunks have been causing trouble for 100's of years.
How about the bars have a responsible service of alcohol policy like Australia? Oh because that doesn't make money.

Poorly written article with no facts, quotes, or statistics to back it up.

Editor Comment:
Fact: British drunk argues with woman, police are called. Fact: Police say they have too many cases like this these days.
We'll leave the accurate counting of drunks in Patong to you, larry.
@coxo, so you're trying to say it's only Brits that are drunk in Patong are you? What have you got against us?

Ive been living and working here in Phuket for around 12 years, and used to go out quite a lot in Patong during the first couple of years while I was working for a tour company. And yes, in my experience the Brits are a lot more violence prone than other nationalities, especially the type that you meet in Patong, you know the shaved headed, tattooed and football club shirt wearing kind. This is a well known fact to anybody living here for a longer period of time. It seems Brits are either pretty sophisticated well spoken people or bad mouthing, and aggressive types like the ones described above, speaking a kind of english Id say many native english speakers have a hard time understanding. Think Wayne Rooney without the football talent.
GB is maybe the last country in Europe where differences between people when it comes to social background are so very clearly visible. This is anyway my experience, not only in Thailand but also from working at several holiday resorts in Spain and Turkey.

"Low cost airlines = low class tourists"
Simply not true. During low season most of our "Low cost airline" customers are either families traveling with kids or group tours of young office workers from India, China, Mid-east, HK, Korea and Japan.
Well behaved and much preferable as customers than the drunken louts we typically see during high season when fares are higher.

Its all so convenient for the bib to lay the blame, perfect excuse when they don't turn up. Blame the tourists.

Please can any one tell me why the relevance of the story is "British drunk". When in fact the guy in the picture is an Aussie expat...name supplied if you really want. Really..really if report news get facts correct...bet this never gets posted Ed. and by the way, he wasn't carrying his passport at the time of the problem (so nationality cannot be verified by BIB before you censure me for factual evidence..( I was the guy in the red shirt in the corner)

The story doesn't highlight the man's nationality and the article quotes what we were told by police. Whether he was British, Australian or from some other Western country is immaterial. What ''guy in the red shirt in the corner''?
Christian I think its about time you went back out in Patong before you make remarks like that. I have lived in Patong for eight years and go out every night and I can't remember the last time I saw a British football hooligan type the like that you describe. The last half dozen fights I have seen down Bangla have been caused by Scandinavians that includes the one who smashed a full bottle of beer over my head because I was taking too long waiting for my card to come out of the ATM machine i was using.

Generalisations that budget airlines means budget tourists is bull. I always hunt for budgets and specials as our South African Rand is so weak, this does not mean that I am a budget tourist who causes problems when in Thailand. Absurd assumption.

I never thought I would come to saying this, but the only solution is to ban alcohol in Patong and other trouble spots in Phuket. The government has already started to do it in Bangkok, with excellent results.
Ban drinking in Patong and you'll see hotel profits skyrocket as real, quality tourists with money, mostly families and upmarket couples, flock to Phuket in their droves instead of the shabbily dressed, low-class low-rent lager louts and sex pervs that blight our streets at the present and make Patong a dangerous place to be every night of the year.

I haven't been back to Thailand in 20 years. I went back this year and I was quite amazed how many "farangs" live in Thailand now. Thailand now vs 20 years ago is a cesspool of Brits, Germans and Australians who couldn't survive in their own respective countries, so they go to Thailand where they think they are worshipped, but in reality, they are treated better because they have the Khon Cao 'mystique' and most importantly money.
Anyway, Thailand has lost its identity and the land of smiles is now the land of the lost.

Val, you're quite right! As a 5-year foreign resident of Phuket, I stopped associating with Westerners three years ago already for my own safety and health. I had been assaulted, given death threats and cheated out of money on several occasions. I much prefer the company of Thais, with whom I have never had a single problem, only a lot of fun. The type of Westerners living long term in Phuket are, in 9 out of 10 cases, illegal aliens with former criminal records from their own country, sociopaths, often career criminals, drunken, druggies and sex pervs of various descriptions. Since I want to mix with normal people, I had to stop going to the kind of places where foreigners in Phuket hang out and I cultivated a small group of interesting, loyal Thai friends. How much more civilized than mixing with the super-creepy Westerners who make Phuket their home.

@ JJ so of the 10 of us who have written comments on here 9 of us are "illegal aliens with former criminal records from their own country, sociopaths, often career criminals, drunken, druggies and sex pervs of various descriptions." Well I'm the 1 in 10 so you are obviously one of the 9 out of ten!!!

@phuket madness @ JJ @Val
There are so many wankers in Phuket because local administrations and civil servants make a lot of money from those disputable westerners if they need proxy Thai nominees to own Thai companies, extend their Visas and be off the hook in case of wrongdoing such as road accident, fighting, cheating other foreigners and so on...
Stop all type of grafts and they will disappear as fast they came to get rich in one night.
