Kathu Director Veera Kerdsirimongkol oversees the Soi Happy Road raid

District Chief to Target Patong Russians in 'Surprise' Phuket Raids

Tuesday, April 23, 2013
PHUKET: Surprise raids are to be conducted on three Russian businesses in and around Soi Bangla, a senior Phuket official forecast yesterday.

Director of Kathu District, Veera Kerdsirimongkol, said that the raids would be mounted because he was anxious to make sure there were no illegal Russian businesses in Patong.

He knew there were three Russian businesses operating in and around Soi Bangla and has decided it's almost time to pay them a visit.

Agitation by residents and local businesses in two other Phuket regions, Karon and Bang Tao, has seen some Russian-run businesses close down while others have proven to be above board.

Khun Veera, two months into his role as the senior official in Kathu, one of three Phuket districts - and the one that oversees Patong - has adopted an uncompromising approach.

He has lifted the number of Kathu district volunteers from 10 to 50 and organised with Patong police to hold mobile checkpoints at the weekend, during Phuket Bike Week.

On Saturday a man pulled a gun at a beachfront concert by singer Carabao and was immediately arrested.

''He was in an argument with a tourist,'' Khun Veera said. ''Shooting tourists is not something we would like to see.''

Khun Veera said the man claimed he was the son of a police superintendent from another province but Khun Veera ordered that he be taken to Kathu Police Station regardless.

''I have been expected to get a telephone call but haven't heard,'' Khun Veera said. ''Perhaps the young man was exaggerating a little.''

Khun Veera said that since he arrived on Phuket, touts with five slow lorises and two iguanas had been arrested in Soi Bangla.

Phuketwan spotted one iguana on the head of a young tourist, being photographed by a tout, on a late-night stroll at the weekend.

''We hear there's one more iguana,'' Khun Veers said. ''We will be trying to get that one off the street, too.''

The director led a swoop on Soi Happy Road in Patong last week that saw arrests after positive drug tests and the apprehension of one underage sex worker. Three other underage workers were found in bars

Khun Veera says he intends to show no tolerance to drugs or weapons and aims to make Kathu as law-abiding as possible.

I wish Khun Veera good luck in making Kathu "as law abiding as possible" whatever that means ;-)

"Surprise raids are to be conducted on three Russian businesses in and around Soi Bangla, a senior Phuket official forecast yesterday".
Won't be a "surprise" if they read this!
Is this like the "Surprise checkpoints" that they announce every year before Songkran? LOL.

Today at 1400 halfway down Soi Bangla were 2 touts - one with a slow loris and the other with a large iguana. They were both nervous and watching out for the police so guess it will need a plain clothes officer to attend - suspect they will be there again tomorrow

FFS don't these guys have any concept of a SURPRISE RAID ? You don't announce it two days beforehand ok. How do you hope to catch anyone? Oh dear I forgot, it is warn all your buddies to go into hiding or close first, so you can announce the all clear? Duh.

The touts are standing at the entrance of the Patong Promenade opposite jungceylon entrance right now in front of me, holding lorises.

" Three other underage sex workers were found in bars. " Does it mean that sex workers in age are allowed to do that business? Isn't the prostitution illegal, at any age, in Thailand?

'' Three other underage workers were found in bars'' is what the article says.

@slickmelb Thais tend to be a little more flexible with Thai businesses which is understandable as this is Thailand. At the moment they feel there are too many Russians setting up business too quickly and there business methods are quite similar to Thais so the Thais feel competition which they want to control.

surprise visit that we are all aware of now? As for the raids on Soi Happy last week, those bars were open as usual the next night regardless of underage employees being discovered, but they were Thai establishments no Russian owned

Ed, in the article, the preceding sentence to the one I highlighted says,
" ... of one underage sex worker. "
So, it's logic to think that the three
following underage workers were " sex workers."

No it's not. That's your imagination working overtime.

what does it matter if he's related to a cop... is it now legal to shoot someone if your family of the police... last time i checked murder is murder, breaking the law is breaking the law... if anything a relative of a cop should know the law better than anyone

Read between the lines of what k. Veera said. If it didn't matter, why would he make such remarks or better yet, why would anyone expect making such statements would make any difference, unless of course they do.

It's the famous "brown wall" and feel free to interpret it any way that sounds befitting.
