Date Set for Portable Mobile Telephone Numbers

Date Set for Portable Mobile Telephone Numbers

Thursday, October 28, 2010
A NEW ERA in competition for mobile telephone users is expected to begin on December 15 - the date announced today from which mobile numbers on Phuket and in Thailand will be portable between service providers.

Five of the largest service providers have signed on for the December 15 launch of the new arrangement. They are AIS, DTAC, True Move, CAT Telecom and TOT.

For 99 baht, and with the production of a document associated with the number - most likely to be a bill - users can transfer their number from one provider to another for a 99 baht fee.

National Telecommunications Commission member Suranan Wongvithayakamjorn, who heads the project to create mobile number portability, said further testing was required with TOT and True Move to ensure the clearing house for the transfer of numbers was effective with all five big brands.

Industry observers anticipate that once numbers can be maintained for a small fee, some users will be attracted to switch providers and chase special discount offers.

An estimate at June, 2009 put the number of mobile telephones in use in Thailand at 65.83 million in a population of 60 million-plus, with users estimated at about 33 million.

Thais have been swift to take on mobile telephones and reticent to adopt the more expensive access to the Internet and digital communications provided by computers.
