Phuket salutes Camara Ahmed with a candlelight vigil this week

So Close for Camara as FC Phuket Draws 1-1

Saturday, November 6, 2010
FC PHUKET drew its away game with Bangkokglass FC 1-1 tonight, leaving the island team needing a win at home next week to sustain its hopes of rising up to Division One.

Next week's clash against Loei City in Phuket City will be doubly important because FC Phuket plans to make it a benefit match for stricken midfielder Camara Ahmed, who collapsed on-field last Saturday and ''died'' in an ambulance on the way to Bangkok Hospital Phuket.

The 26-year-old midfielder, originally from the Ivory Coast, remained in a coma tonight at another Phuket facility, Vachira Hospital. He opened his eyes during the week but doctors are anxiously awaiting further evidence of brain activity.

FC Phuket had a grip on tonight's game at halftime with a 1-0 lead delivered by A-Disak Kaisorn (No. 21) at the 31-minute mark. But the lead slipped away in the second half as Bangkokglass fought back to equalise.

FC Phuket fans at tonight's game wore white shirts carrying Camara's image and his number 28. Next Saturday, many more fans are expected to take the opportunity to salute the fine young man who, with two other Ivory Coast players, has helped to carry FC Phuket from the bottom to the top of the Southern Division Two in the space of a single season.

Camara's brother, Kone Lassine, went to Bangkok for tonight's game after flying to Phuket just in time for a candlelight vigil involving 300 fans and admirers this week.

Among the many supporters who are willing Camara to get better is FC Phuket president and chief executive of the Phuket Provincial Administrative Organisation, Paiboon Upatising, who has pledged to personally pay Camara's medical costs in intensive care and cardiac care.

Tonight's drawn result leaves FC Phuket third in Group D with six points - a win and three draws - from four games.

What promoted the necessity to move him from Phuket Bangkok hospital. Were they charging too much for medical care or regarded as incompetent? Or is it that if he passes on they can blame the government hospital system for his demise?
I and I am sure many other fans and supporters wish to know the reason for this move especially if he is still in a coma and on life support.
This beggars belief.

The move does not ''beggar belief.'' You have simply failed to read the article that explained the reason for the change in hospitals. I suggest you read it, then retract your false accusations.

Why shoot from the lip? Why assume the worst? You should be ashamed of yourself, and your careless words.

@ editor.
I respectfully withdraw some of my comments made on Saturday however reading the story below from another so called respected newspaper here on Phuket one is at a loss to know who to believe for accuracy.
I would have thought moving someone who is on life support unnecessary and hence the reference to saving costs or otherwise. Does his insurance company have a say in the matter? I assume that as a employee he has mandatory workers compensation cover.
Some factual reporting by whoever has the story wrong, I'm not implying it's PW, would be appreciated.

Indeed. There are often distinctly different versions, and often different answers from different sources. If one or more days elapse between a report and a follow-up, then circumstances can change. Our reports are usually as accurate as we can possibly make them. We do not, for example, simply lift material directly from other sources and republish without checking ourselves. Camara was in Vachira today and his 780,000 baht bill is being paid by Khun Paiboon and his associates.

I have no expertise on insurance but my understanding is that employment-related coverage for expat workers in Thailand is often basic, so private insurance becomes essential.
