Pheu Thai spokesman Phrompong Nopparit at Freedom beach

Clear Guns, Violence from Phuket: Senior Government Official

Saturday, January 14, 2012
PHUKET: A senior Government official foreshadowed a crackdown on guns on Phuket last night, saying that Phuket was an international tourist destination with too much violence.

Pheu Thai Party spokesman Phrompong Nopparit made his comments at a ceremony in Patong on Phuket's popular west coast soon after a man was shot dead near Patong in a land dispute.

''I will recommend to Prime Minister Yingluck (Shinawatra) and Deputy Prime Minister Chalerm (Yoobamrung) that we try to reduce the presence of so many guns on Phuket,'' he said.

''After all, this is an international holiday destination. There are far too many shootings for an international holiday destination that generates so much income for Thailand.

''The only people on Phuket who should have guns are police and local authorities.''

His comments came as he oversaw a parade of Phuket police, Tourist Police and emergency services in Soi Bangla.

Last night's shooting death by two men on a motorcycle of Jakkrit Nutad, 45, in a land dispute north of Patong at Kalim beach followed the assassination of corruption-hating Phuket journalist Wisut ''Ae'' Tangwittayaporn in Phuket's main road on Thursday morning.

Khun Phrompong yesterday visited Freedom Beach, a secluded stretch of sand south of Patong that can only be reached by boat.

Khun Wisut was the first Phuket journalist to highlight irregularities regarding the title deed to a large tract of more than 60 rai fronting the beach.

Forty police are investigating his murder and a quick breakthrough in the investigation is anticipated.

One promising lead soured yesterday, though, when police discovered that the numberplate on the motorcycle ridden by Khun Wisut's killers turned out to be a hand-made fake number.

Security images of what took place - on video taken from camera nearby - were shot at too great a distance to reveal details of the gunman or his rider.

At the same time close all shooting ranges on the island, are they really needed?

"Phuket was an international tourist destination with too much violence."

And you've just figured that out? I, and any other law abiding citizen on Phuket can testify that Phuket is being ruined by greed. But with corruption, scams, murders and the likes that appear so acceptable in Thai society it's no wonder nothing is, or will be, done about the major problems Thailand has as a tourist destination.

The underlying question is... "What are you going to do when there is no tourism?" Think about this carefully because that is the stark truth that is facing Thailand.

Clear guns? Impossible. Thai people love their guns as much as Americans.

How can they "clear Phuket of guns" when the gun owner laws allow personal gun ownership and are very liberal? Will they introduce special laws only for Phuket, or what?

Oh great, another proponent of the "Guns for criminals only" club. Gun control isn't working now (apparently) and people who own guns legally aren't using them in crimes.

Graham,
As long as Thailand is comfortable "hole-selling" sex, don't worry about tourism. I can well imagine men will always flock here as long as sex is cheap and available. Thailand could care less what whitey thinks or wants as long as that is the draw - and it is the draw.

You're clearly a two-star traveller, Media Watcher. There are many more on the upper levels.

Gun laws aren't liberal, the selective enforcement sure is though - for Thai criminals. I own horses and twice now have had to ask neighbors to shoot suffering horses as the local vets don't have the proper drugs. I have a good reason to own a gun and I owned and fired guns for over 20 years in the US without mishap. Yet in Thailand it is impossible for me to own a gun legally, but every Thai yahoo and his pillion riding cohort has one.
