Chinese Tourist Drowns on Phuket to Phi Phi Speedboat Day Trip

Saturday, September 6, 2014
PHUKET: A Chinese tourist died yesterday in what medical staff are categorising as yet another day-trip drowning off Phuket.

According to a nurse on Phi Phi island today, the woman, Yuhua Wang, 52, was brought to the local hospital about 1.30pm and treated in the emergency ward. She still had a pulse and cpr and oxygen were applied.

It's understood the woman was on a snorkelling day trip from Phuket to Phi Phi but that she was swimming after lunch, not snorkelling, when it became apparent that she was in trouble.

Staff at Phi Phi Hospital organised her immediate transfer back to Phuket and the better equipment at Vachira Phuket Hospital in Phuket City.

However, Ms Wang died before she arrived at the hospital.

Chinese tourists who are not familiar with snorkelling equipment or good swimmers sometimes find themselves in difficulties on day-trips off Phuket. Tour agents and speedboat crews have been asked to improve safety measures to eliminate needless drownings.

Figures likely to be revealed on September 15 at the next meeting between Phuket Governor Maitree intrusud and the island's honorary consuls are expected to show a considerable reduction in the number of drownings on beaches and day-trips compared to last year.

I'm no doctor but why would they administer CPR if she still had a pulse ?

Many people are not aware of the fact that during a 'drowning process', even when the person get rescued and still has a pulse, lung tissues can be irreversebly damaged and the patient dies during the following 24 hours.

Which is why the rescues have to take place as speedily as possible, at best with a jet-ski and sled and an ambulance waiting close to the beach. Phiuket has a way to go.

The Phuket Marine office is pushing to have all foreign Yachts fit an AIS (Auto ID System) , main reason safety to determine if they were involved in an accident. I have just been around here 20 years and I do not really recall many incidents that involved foreign yachts, but accidents, deadly involving Thai vessels , well there has been a lot. So if this push for fitting yachts with AIS is due to safety , then why not do the right thing and have all vessels transporting tourists have AIS fitted ? This would make sense or maybe not ?

I think the fact that so many Chinese die from drowning in a complex set of factors. Many Chinese do not live near the sea, or indeed water. It is clear the Chinese are not in many cases taught to swim, or educated about water safety. Then there is the question of is it the boat crew's responsibility to have to be able to watch every person in the water all the time? The swimmers are adults after all. I think a start should be at Immigration a warning leaflet is given to all arrivals in many languages warning of the dangers of the sea, especially between May and November even for experienced swimmers. What ever is done something needs to be done quickly as there are far too many deaths, it is not just the person that dies but the husband, wife, children, family and friends that suffer when a person dies. Army please make changes as soon as possible to stop the drownings.

The seas around Phuket during the low season can be treacherous - I have been on several day trips to the Islands where I have declined to go snorkelling off the boat due to the conditions in the water . I am fit and active and a good swimmer but allowing tourists to go into the water unchecked will always results in these tragic unnecessary deaths - the tour companies and the boat captains need to be held more responsible

It would be useful if police teams on Phuket and in Krabi actually began a thorough investigation into why so many Chinese tourists drown. Their deaths appear to be avoidable.

Another Chinese national drowns- At the same time- Laurie howls at his foul demeanor-trying to blame others for his chronic-un-addressed- self-inflicted- Thai- expat misery of the third kind.

There is plenty of blame to go around in terms of excessive Chinese drownings, but howling-baying-barking at the moon ain't gonna resolve the issue..

I am a decent swimmer, and have been on those snorkeling trips several times, at Koh Surin, Koh Similan, etc. The problem ? GENERALLY-It's "every man for themselves" on those things, and the Chinese are not faring well under inherent "SINK OR SWIM" conditions! Some operators are more diligent- but too many people ( like me ) don't always bother with the life jackets, which serves to exacerbate the issue..its really my bpen rai out there at the moment..

But how will they tally up the numbers- with no monthly figures released on drownings and road deaths since April of 2012?? We have Clairvoyance now?
