Just why the Phuket tour bus hit the ditch has not clearly been explained

Phuket Tour Bus That Crashed, Injuring Many, Passed Official Check

Wednesday, July 29, 2015
PHUKET: A Phuket tour bus that crashed, injuring almost everyone on board, was checked for mechanical defects and approved by officials earlier this month, Phuketwan has learned.

Four Chinese tourists were admitted to Phuket hospitals and 13 others less seriously injured when the medium-sized bus crashed into a ditch alongside the bypass road in Phuket City on Sunday.

Passersby claimed some of the bus tyres seemed bald but an official at the Phuket Land Transport Department said the bus, bought second-hand by BRT Travel in 2013, passed its last check on July 8.

The driver told investigating police that he tried to pass a truck as he travelled down the hill towards the t-junction with Thepkasattri Road.

''However, the bus driver then discovered there was a car in front of the truck,'' the officer said.

That section of the bypass road is badly pitted. The driver told police it was raining heavily at the time and he lost control of the bus.

Tourism industry officials said the group of Chinese were insured before they left China and that the bus company should pay for any additional expenses required as part of their medical treatment.

Old buses no longer completely safe are being used to transport tourists around Phuket, critics say after a series of crashes.

The driver of the bus that crashed on Sunday faces further questioning.

Wonder if the police will ask the dtiver oif he knows that you only start to overtake a car when you are sure there is space in front of that car you go to overtake.

The most of the buses that run around here in Phuket come in from Bangkok. And they're closed or banned to drive in Bangkok due to poor brakes, exhaust emissions, etc.

At least one tyre has come off. You may be looking at the back of the bus.

This bus should now be inspected again by an independent organization, if available! Does this inspected and approved bus says something about the quality of the bus or of the quality of the tests done?

@phuketgreed: You think these "tests" are actually done? Phht!

All the tyres are a miss match of crossply and radials. Stupid.
One of the rear tyres are smooth and no tyres have come off ED.
What you see is in fact the plastic wheel arch surround.
Always cheap, cheap and save money at the cost of safety and lives.
Pathetic.
Whoever passed this buss for an inspection should face the music and get new spectacles and a magnifying glass.

It is certainly a case that requires police and the Land Transport Department to explain the cause of the crash. The Chinese embassy should insist on that.

Ed.. re: your reply to Bjorn, you eyes seem to be failing you, BOTH front tires are still attached... no truck/bus has "dual" tires on the front.

Maybe they have 1 set of new tyres which they fit for inspections; then put the old tyres back on for service??

Editor Comment:

Well, there's certainly cause for an investigation as to the cause of the crash.

Overtakes down a hill in pouring rain cant see the space in front of him wonders why he had a problem also has mismatched tyres which could have been swapped for inspection purposes nothing to stop them seeing if it passes today should a major point of the investigation.

Will things ever change, they never have in the years I stayed in Phuket. Part of the reason I left this month, gets boring after a while, same old stories, car crashes, drowning, deportation, drugs.......also Phuket is full of non European bus loads of loud Chinese hardly relaxing when a swarm of them enter a 7Eleven and shout at each other - such low class. Glad to be in London where safety standards are higher and ripoffs are lower. Thais in most cases just think it is ok to rip foreigners off. Ignorance in 2015.
