The Chedi, setting for the 'Summer in Phuket' party this year

Chedi Phuket Goes DIY: Name Change Next?

Wednesday, September 9, 2009
ONE OF Phuket's best-known resorts, The Chedi, has changed managements after 14 years.

A spokesperson at the well-known five-star resort, on a headland with the up-market Amanpuri near Surin beach, confirmed last night that there had been ''a divorce.''

''Yes, it's true,'' the Chedi spokesman said. ''I understand a media release is coming.''

The owners, Surin Bay Company Ltd, are now planning to DIY manage the resort, noted for its scenic outlook and steep descent to a secluded beach.

The former management company, General Hotel Management Ltd (GHM), may have beaten the Chedi's owners to an announcement.

A report posted on the HospitalityBizIndia website last night said: ''As part of the agreement, the hotel will still continue to use the name The Chedi Phuket for another one year and the staffs, who are directly employed by the owning company, will remain unchanged.''

The media release quotes Hans R Jenni, President and Director of GHM, as saying: ''GHM has managed this hotel since 1995 and its success has helped us expand The Chedi brand globally. We wish the property and its owners every success in the future.''

Precisely what triggered the ''divorce'' is not known. But 14 years is a good marriage.

The media release continues: ''GHM also has another Phuket project currently under development. The Yamu is a 32-acre resort and villa development located on a private peninsula on Phuket's east coast, approximately 25 minutes from Phuket International Airport.

''GHM manages a portfolio of highly regarded and award-winning hotels including The Setai in Miami, The Datai in Langkawi, The Nam Hai in Hoi An, The Legian in Bali, The Strand in Yangon, as well as The Chedi hotels in Muscat, Bali and Chiang Mai.''
