Jason Hoffman, 32, who must pay compensation to three victims' families

Canadian Rider Compensates Two Phuket Death Crash Victims, 1.5 Million Baht Still Outstanding

Wednesday, May 13, 2015
PHUKET: A Canadian man facing criminal charges over a fatal Phuket motorcycle crash reached a compensation settlement with two victims yesterday, say police.

Jason Hoffman, 32, still has to negotiate a payment with the family of an 18-year-old woman killed in the smash, a Phuket police investigator says.

Mr Hoffman, whose family in Canada has been raising money on his behalf, met with victims and their representatives at Tung Thong Police Station in central Phuket yesterday.

Pranee Pitaksaktamrong, 18, was killed instantly when a motorcycle ridden by Mr Hoffman crashed into a motorcycle being ridden by Khun Pranee. Two others on the motorcycle, Wiyada Rodpradit, 17, and Krisada Hemprom, 21, suffered serious injuries.

Mr Hoffman is also still recovering from his own serious wounds.

Police allege Mr Hoffman's motorcycle crossed to the wrong side of Vichitsongkram Road as he rode from Phuket City to Patong at 5am on April 17, hours after he arrived on Phuket.

''A deal was reached to pay Khun Wiyada 150,000 baht while Khun Krisada will receive 100,000 baht,'' an officer told Phuketwan today. ''Negotiations are continuing with representatives of Khun Pranee's family, who are seeking 1.5 million baht.''

The compensation payments have no bearing on charges of drink-driving and recklessly causing a death against Mr Hoffman but settlement with victims and the victim's family can ameliorate a sentence.

The motorcycle hirer has also been paid 23,000 baht, the officer said.

A date has yet to be set for a hearing at Phuket Provincial Court. Mr Hoffman remains on bail but his passport has been surrendered.

When does rental of motorbike, big bikes, jetski's and so to people without a Valid drivers liscence (needed for insureance payments) get prohibited by law. When do the rental business get their responsibility and liability in these cases. The government doesn't discourage this illegal business. Introduction of Pattaya style 20 baht pick-ups and Bangkok level Taxi pricing could & would also help diminish this kind of incidents. The Top authorities should step into this issue.

Also interesting that the truck driver who killed the Chilean cyclist in korat was fined just 7,500 baht. No word of any compensation there. Thailand sure does have some anomalies.
