The military takeover has sparked a remarkable cleansing of Phuket beaches

Big Ticks All Round as Tourism Gets Set to Tout The New Phuket

Friday, July 11, 2014
PHUKET: The clean, natural look of Phuket's beaches was already encouraging an increase in bookings and will promote a more sustainable future, a leading industry spokesman said yesterday.

''I forecast an average occupancy rate for Phuket for 2014 of about 75 percent,'' said Bhuritt Maswongsa, Vice President of the Phuket Tourism Association.

What people are saying about changes to Phuket's beaches and to its tuk-tuk and taxis is beginning to evoke the concept first defined by resort owner and former honorary consul Larry Cunningham of ''the New Phuket.''

He figured that if Phuket could make a fresh start, the Europeans who had forsaken the once-beautiful holiday island would return.

And Khun Bhuritt said yesterday that the big Phuket comeback already appears to be underway.

''Tourists are mostly delighted that the beaches have been cleared,'' he said. ''The Phuket of today looks much more like the Phuket of 20 or 25 years ago. We believe that the cleanup is positive, and that the island's future has already become more sustainable.''

Charter flights from China were on the rise, he said, along with bookings from Europe.

''Now we have to promote the image through the media and to make sure people are confident about security and safety.''

He said bookings in July were already up 10 percent and more improvement was expected.

Clean natural look of Phuket beaches???...I beg to differ re' Patong Beach..sure the beach chairs and umbrellas are down but there were jet skiis and parasailors parked all over the beach today from one end to the other...It seems the army will allow this trash to stay

I'm surprised the world has learnt of the "new" Phuket so quickly.

Patong today looks impressive: of course, you can't expect it to look as " a virgin beach" , but vista was finally TROPICAL one, not that very cheap overdeveloped Mediterranean one as it used to be. Loma park looks well to.
And yes, some folks brought chairs themselves.

I agree with Laurie. Went into 2 travel agencies in Glasgow today & they haven't a clue what is happening in Thailand or Phuket. TAT fantasy again - or simply wishful thinking!

What happens in Glascow may not necessarily be an accurate guide to the rest of the planet, Logic. Wouldn't people on Phuket know if bookings were up? .

We are a family that has been coming to Phuket since 1987 and we can honestly say we are not happy about the loss of the beach chairs and umbrellas. If you are serious about getting back to nature, clean up the sewerage, get rid of the jet skis and speed boats........really what harm do the chairs and umbrellas do? I for one don't want to sit on the sand. The comment regarding Patong having no such things 20 years ago is just not true, there were umbrellas and beach chairs in 1987. We liked them back then and we still like them now........think about what is really needed for change!

The umbrellas and loungers were generating the commerce that would have eventually destroyed all the beaches. If the money from the umbrellas and loungers had been directed to maintaining the environment and preserving Phuket's beaches and reefs, the story might be different today, Shona. But people have been using public space to make private profit, as you have experienced, since 1987. The beaches belong to all Thais, not just the opportunistic vendors. Beach-lovers in Australia and California don't encourage the belief that the sands are there to be turned into shopping malls. As Phuket's prime natural assets, the beaches need to be preserved for future generations of visitors and residents. You will be surprised how inviting the beaches look, and how easily most people are adapting.

Bookings up 10 percent in weeks amazing guess the hotel industry is celebrating
when are they going to put in to keep it that way - like warning tourists of swimming in the monsoon season?

Perhaps the Army should do the rounds of the resorts.

In the days following the military coup, most guests cancelled at my hotel.

After a few days, new room bookings started again and the guests returned.

Now we are at about 95% occupancy rate, which can't be ignored, considering that it's the rainy season.

Bookings look fine for the coming months, so the army does seem to be doing the right thing.
