PHUKET: Fourteen young beauty contestants from the Czech Republic breezed onto Phuket this afternoon looking forward to their stay on the holiday island.
One of them, Tezeza Chlebovaka, said how much she was looking forward to checking out Phuket's famous beaches and trying the food. Ah yes, the food.
''I've heard about tom yam kung, so that's high on my list to try,'' she said.
The group, accompanied by chaperones and a large media crew, have spent five days in Pattaya and will go on to Bangkok for a similar time when they say farewell to Phuket on January 16.
The Czech party was welcomed today at Phuket International Airport by general manager Wing Commander Prathuang Somkhom and Assistant Director of the Phuket office of the Tourism Authority of Thailand, Wannaprapa Suksomboon.
Khun Wannaprapa said that the beauty contest was ''good for Phuket'' because showing what Phuket had to offer via Czech television would almost certainly mean an increase in the 2000 Czechs who visited last year.
The Czech contestants follow in the dainty footsteps of recent visits by contestants from Belgium, Poland, France and Slovakia.
Over the next five days, contestants will be looking at Thai boxing, going snorkelling, visiting Phi Phi and James Bond island and touring the old part of Phuket Town. And there will be plenty of time for tom yam kung.

Those are supposed to be the beauties? I can see 100 more beautiful Thai girls on any street in Thailand. Been 4 years in Thailand and these Western women just look like hook-nosed witches to me now...

All women are beautiful. You are the one with the problem, Jeremy, not them.
