Police are expected to question two Russian men on Wednesday about an attack on a Phuket couple at a popular beach club.
PHUKET: Phuket couple Tom Travers and Jen Khamsorn, badly beaten in an attack early today, have called for a group of Russians to be charged with attempted murder.
''Phuket used to be a peaceful island,'' Khun Jen said from Bangkok Hospital Phuket. ''Please spread the word. I don't want it [Phuket] turning into a mess.''
Khun Jen, 31, has a broken nose and Mr Travers, 32, suffered a cheekbone broken in three places in the attack at Phuket's Catch Beach Club, a popular seaside nightspot in Surin.
Mr Travers, who has dual British and Canadian citizenship, said today that he and Khun Jen took a friend from out of town to Catch Beach Club about 12.30am, after dinner.
He was awaiting surgery at Bangkok Hospital Phuket and said the cheekbone breaks were painful. Mr Travers was placed in a bed in the Cardiac Care Unit about 6am.
Police initially thought the fight may have been over Khun Jen but she said today that she was assaulted, for no apparent reason.
''I intend to pursue a charge of attempted murder against these people,'' Khun Jen said from Mr Travers' bedside.
''Around 2.30 we just get ready to check out from Catch.
''Tom was standing with some British man right behind them, one, two, three, four Russian guys. I saw them have a little bit [of an] argument with the British guy and accidentally Tom came up and says hi with him, with that British guy.
''I don't know what nationality, but he sounds British. And I said, 'you know what, we got to go.' It's two o'clock, lights up, music off and then suddenly he [a Russian man] pushed me and punched me right on the face.
''And then Tom jumped in and after that everything was just chaos. Six, at least five of them, coming just on Tom.
''One of them chocked me around the neck. I'm almost unconscious. He's unconscious for a bit.
''All the staff come to help. They all fight for help but everything just happened very quickly.''
Khun Jen and Mr Travers went to Cherng Talay Police Station, where she said two Russians had already arrived.
''I report the case,'' Khun jen said. ''Then suddenly another one come in who was not in the scene. And they said, 'we want to report'.
''He said, 'I want to talk to you' and I said 'I'm not going to say anything. I'm not going to say anything'.
''He is Russian but he can speak English very well.
''I report the case. I said, 'I'm not going to give up'. We not do anything thing. They attack us first.
''He [the police officer] said report the case and then go [to get medical attention]. And after we left the police station three of them ,two innocent and another middle man still there. After that they let them go, they let them go.''
Lieutenant Rassada Klungwong of Cherng Talay Police Station told Phuketwan today that he urged the people involved in the fight to seek hospital treatment.
Nick Anthony, who was at Bangkok Hospital Phuket today, said he and Tom Travers were partners in Indigo Real Estate on Phuket.
Coincidentally, the British and Canadian ambassadors were on Phuket today with other embassy officials to join the Netherlands ambassador in talks with Phuket Governor Maitree Inthusud about tourism safety.
Sounds like a terrible ordeal. whether or not you believe the entire account of the story is up to you. however the assault of a women is never acceptable or can be condoned. The Russians are really getting bad press recently and this will certainly not help.
