Bangkok Soldiers Shot, Wounded in Ambush by Protest Guard

Sunday, April 6, 2014
PHUKET: Five soldiers on motorcycles were ambushed in Bangkok last night with two shot and wounded by gunfire.

The soldiers were patrolling the Thanon Witthayu district of Thailand's capital amid security fears that a mass rally by ''Red'' supporters of the government of Yingluck Shinawatra could spiral into confrontation with anti-government protesters.

The army has been neutral in the political street uprising that has claimed more than 20 lives and injured more than 200 since November.

Soldier Prasert Jansri was pierced with a shot that entered his chest and exited through his back in the ambush about 10pm. Another soldier, Chaiyan Lekpong, was also admitted to hospital with a gunshot wound.

The shooting is being blamed on a security guard associated with the protesting Network of Students and People for the Reform of Thailand, who saw the soldiers, not dressed in uniform, ride up to a protest site and opened fire.

The man allegedly then held a gun to the head of another casually dressed rider until it was explained that all five men on the three motorcycles were unarmed patrolling soldiers. The shooter ran off.

The five unarmed soldiers were carrying out a regular street patrol. More than 170 bunkers occupied by soldiers are still visible on Bangkok's streets to protect residents and reduce the possibility of violence.

The Erawan Centre says 21 people have been killed and 236 injured since November 30 in street clashes. Six victims remain in hospital.

Protest leader Suthep Thaugsuban has announced that the next mass gathering will last at least 15 days and be the ''final war'' to oust Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra.

He ran away when he was told they were soldiers. (Cos shooting "Red Shirts" would be OK ?) And if he hadn't been told, he'd have executed them all ? I find it astounding how some people have no value or respect for life. Is this an example of Suthep's reformed Thailand ? If he was a PDRC guard, he clearly was under no order to negotiate and maintain peace, in which case, leaders should also bear some responsibility. The army are not gonna be happy ...

In a moment this is forgotten and the propaganda will again claim that Sutthep has no blood as his hands...

Editor Comment:

You'd have some trouble explaining how Suthep, who wants the protest to be peaceful and has no control over the student group, has blood on his hands. That's the poorly-thought propaganda, Sailor.

"You would have some trouble explaining how Suthep???.."

I would argue that Suthep actually wants violence. He wants to create a situation whereby the military can get involved and hurry up the exceedingly slow motion flailing coup. That's why he takes to the stage every night to goad and threaten the members and the families of the legitimate government of Thailand.
When it come to apportioning blame for the deaths, injuries and violence of the last 5 months - Sutheps' name is front and centre!
The sooner he is locked up the better it is for the future well-being of Thailand and all Thais who love democracy.

We haven't heard any goads and threats, HQB. Your argument seems extremely light on substance but you are free to support a corrupt government if that's where self-interest leads you.

If you haven't heard any goads or threats from the lunatic then either you haven't been paying attention or your ears are sewn on.
(moderated)
Thailand is finally at the dawn of a new era of equality.

The bit we've moderated is basically all goads and threats, with plenty of insults thrown in.

Five sporty looking plaincloth young men on motorbikes closing in on the guard at dark. I can understand he felt threatened. Everyone forget the grenades?
I do not condone or want to reason for using a gun, but u have to see, that he did not expect soldiers to be. The soldiers have rescued the students not long ago after being beleaguered by red front people with police (at least not helping). So whatever one thinks, the army is not the enemy of the students.
It is a clear sign how high the tension is in Bangkok. Thailand is again at the brink of civil unrest.

If violence flares then Suthip can get out of his murder charge by charging Yingluck with the same offence, do a deal and they both get off. Ed that is why Yingluck hasn't sent the guns in has called Sutheps bluff. If you think Suthep is doing anything for the benefit of Thailand and not himself then you are as gullible as the fools who hand him money.

You must have intimate knowledge of Suthep and be a political insider to express views with such absolute certainty, Pete. Please tell us how closely you work with Thai politics, and how you manage to know the facts with such conviction. Most of us are just onlookers and some of us even prefer to make our own judgements, based on what we see and hear.

@Editor
It seems to me, that you are a friend of this want to be a new "Fuehrer" Suthep.
Suthep cost Thailand more money, than the last floods....

Why become rabid when being rational is what's required. The use of Nazi-related insults shows you're way over the top. People who are concerned only about money are the cause of the problem, Marc S. Could you be one of them?
