Bangkok goes under . . . flooding is now ''very serious'' and worsening

Bangkok Floods 'Very Serious,' Water Laps at Don Muang Airport

Monday, October 24, 2011
1pm UPDATE

cnn.com Floodwaters in Bangkok have reached Don Muang Airport, one of the Thai capital's two main airports and home to the flood relief operation command, which may have to move to another location, according to Bangkok's governor.

bloomberg.com Suvarnabhumi, Bangkok's main international airport, was operating normally.

Phuketwan PhuketWATCH Floods Special

A special updating roundup of news about the Bangkok floods, with relevant reports from national and international media.

Associated Press Governor of Bangkok Sukhumbhand Paribatra issued a dramatic live televised late-night warning to residents of Bangkok to prepare for floodwaters to roll deeper into the city from suburban areas already choking under the deluge. On the warning list was the Chatuchak district, popular with tourists and locals for its Weekend Market.

nationmultimedia.com Outspoken Science Minister Plodprasop Suraswadi urged the government to come clean with the people of Bangkok as all parts of the capital would be submerged for more than a month. "If people know the whole truth, their fear will gradually go away and they will instead struggle to live on. So, the government must disclose the real situation," he said.

Phuketwan Update At least one international news media organisation, Australia's ABC, is reporting that Bangkok's airports are now under threat from rising floodwater. ABC footage today showed water lapping at one entry to Don Muang Airport, where 3000 refugees are being housed. Although built on reclaimed marshes, Bangkok's most important air hub, Suvarnabhumi International Airport, is still said by authorities to be safe behind 3.5 metre earthen floodwalls.

''The government is having to make decisions about which key assets it is going to protect,'' said the ABC correspondent.

An NGO official working with children told the BBC the situation in Bangkok was ''very serious'' with a growing number of people unable to be certain about supplies of water and food.

smh.com.au A grim-faced Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra has warned Bangkok's 12 million residents that they have until Tuesday to move their belongings to high ground before huge floodwaters hit the capital.

thejakartaglobe.com Deputy PM Kittirat Na-Ranong said making essential supplies available in one central place in Bangkok would allow stores whose supply chains have been interrupted to quickly stock up ''as many items are missing from the shelves.''

cnn.com The worst flooding to afflict Thailand in half a century could take more than a month to recede in some areas, the Thai government said Sunday. The country is also bracing for more high tides in the coming week, according to Thailand's Flood Relief Operations Command. High tides cause rivers to back up, subsequently raising water levels.

bloomberg Thailand's navy downplayed concerns of flooding in inner Bangkok after PM Yingluck warned the capital may be at risk, adding to the confusion over the severity of the deluge. Floodwaters throughout the capital may reach more than one meter (3.3 feet), Yingluck said in response to questions from reporters.

guardian.co.uk The jury is out on Yingluck's leadership and her ability to pull Thailand through the ongoing deluge. Whether and how she bounces back from this flooding crisis will define her premiership.

cnn.com ''I would like to apologise to the public because it has been difficult to make advanced notice about the floods,'' PM Yingluck said, according to the Thai News Agency. ''There are many factors beyond our expectation. Informing too early could cause panic and mistakes could happen easily, but people should be alert and closely follow up the situation.''

bangkokpost.com The confidence of foreign investors in Thailand is facing a major test as the flooding raises concerns about the country's ability to handle long-term natural disaster risks, foreign business leaders and a local analyst have warned.

bloomberg Floods north of the capital have swamped thousands of businesses. Thailand makes about a quarter of the world's hard-disk drives and serves as a production hub for Japanese carmakers and electronics firms.

abc.net.au More than 100 people have been killed in flash floods in central Burma after heavy storms this week, an official said. ''So far, 35 dead bodies were found out of 106 missing people."

nst.com.my [Malaysia offers aid] Tour operators have been asked to repackage their products in view of the major floods in Thailand and the recent earthquake in Bali. Tourism Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ng Yen Yen, predicting more Russians could choose Malaysia, said: ''Among the packages that can be promoted are the Langkawi and Phuket islands vacations."
