AN AUSTRALIAN tourist collapsed and died in a Phuket street after finding his favorite restaurant closed, a police officer said today.
Police Lieutenant Nikikorn Rawang of Chalong said that the man, Stephen Lawton, 55, had been due to catch a flight home to Sydney later that evening.
It is believed Mr Lawton suffered a heart attack about 3pm on Friday in the street in Karon, outside the Bamboo Restaurant near Karon Temple. Bystanders attempted to revive him, with no success, Lieutenant Nikikorn said.
Mr Lawton's wife Christine was with him at the time. A son and daughter have since arrived on Phuket to help with arrangements, Lieutenant Nikikorn said.
Mr Lawton's body, now at Patong Hospital, is expected to be flown back to Sydney from Phuket.
