As caning for fraternising with the opposite sex outside of marriage is already punishable by caning in Aceh in an ironic way we should applaud the Aceh government for their move towards equality. If you didn't complain about the former you shouldn't about the latter.

I fail to see the comparison, Stuart. While the rest of the world is gradually recognising gay marriage, homosexuals are to be caned as punishment in Aceh solely for their sexuality. Adultery has nothing to do with their ''crime.'' There is no cause for applause.

@Ed, A handful of mostly western supercilious countries 'the rest of the world' does not make. This kind of imperial thinking is on the way out and it's time to recognise that the overwhelming proportion of humanity are Asian and African and that their views are just as likely to be correct as yours if not more so.

Editor Comment:

There may be more truth in what you say this time Stuart than there was in your original comment. If the knowledge of the overwhelming proportion of humanity in Asia and Africa about what's happening in Aceh rivals mine, that surely would be an improvement. You got it wrong. Never mind.

Ed, nowhere in the article does it state that homosexuals will be caned solely for their sexuality, as you imply.
It says people will be caned for gay sex between Muslim men or women, Clearly two different scenarios.
As gays can't marry it would clearly be sex outside of marriage. Nowhere does Stuart imply or state adultery. He was clear about sex outside marriage. You were the only one to mention adultery.
Stuart is merely saying that similar Laws for heterosexuals and homosexuals would on the face of it, appear fair.
He has not made any comment pro or against the religious beliefs of Aceh. I think you got it wrong, not Stuart, and that you owe him an apology.

Apart from the obvious idiocy of applauding ultraviolent punishment for a natural act, Stuart compares sex between homosexuals with adultery among heterosexuals. In one case, sex within marriage is tolerated. In the other case, sex of any kind is liable to be punished by the cane. I am sure intelligent readers understand the difference, even if you and Stuart struggle, chill.
