'100 Percent Enforcement' Ordered as Phuket Police Are Told to Tame Taxis, Tuk-Tuks

Wednesday, December 18, 2013
PHUKET: Region 8 Police Commander Major General Panya Mamen was telling all of Phuket's police today that they are to apply ''100 percent law enforcement'' in dealing with the island's tuk-tuks and taxis.

He was speaking to about 40 senior officers from Phuket's 10 police stations and to Tourist Police leaders.

''There will be no more allowances for people who say 'I am the cousin of so-and-so' or 'my boss is a very big guy,'' the commander told officers in a gung-ho speech designed to change the wayward ways of island drivers.

Since the recent promotion of Major General Panya and Phuket Police Commander Major General Ong-Art Phiwruangnont, 97 more police reinforcements have arrived - including women officers.

Observers say there has been a noticeable improvement in standards.

Traffic in Patong, however, is said to be chaotic during the Patong Carnival, which runs until Friday, because many drivers simply ignore the rules.

"Checkpoints on Phuket" -- like always, no surprises there. How comes, there a no unexpected locations? They worry to much of the unexpected results?

I do respect that ladies are protected from the worst crimes of life which I imagine is why female officers are not out on the streets, but at the same time how do the men search female suspects. Do they have to take them to a station or are they allowed to search female suspects? Anyone know?

It's great that they publish the exact location of every checkpoint. This way all would-be drunk drivers can easily take alternate routes and the statistics will look nicer too.

I spoke to a couple of tourists yesterday that after refusing to a 500B fare to go from the weekend market to central (which is practically just around the corner) flagged down a taxi in font of the market, and were then surrounded by and forced out of the taxi by a gang of angry taxi drivers from the rank in front of market. One guys told them "I own all the taxi's around here, you will not find another one, you must come with us." They were very frightened and intimidated. The driver they ended up going with then took them some circuitous route down some dark sois they believe just to frighten them.
