WEST SANDS was given the go-ahead yesterday for construction of an additional 157 rooms.at Mai Khao, on Phuket's west coast north of the airport.
Approval was given by the Governor's special committee on the environment. Application for this particular part of the large development was made almost two years ago.
The committee was told that West Sands has reached an agreement with local villagers, the local administration and rangers in the adjoining Sirinath National Park on the environmental management of a billabong.
An access pathway to the beach for locals has also been agreed.
The billabong, known as Billabong Tungtien, requires a natural tidal flow of water from the sea.
While the water channel is government-owned, it flows across West Sands land.
The billabong is one of only five remaining on the island, the committee was told.
An Outrigger resort and a large waterpark are part of the development.
