OVERLOOKING the sea from the Surin hillside is The Quarter, a new villa and condo enclave that was launched with a showing yesterday evening.
The neighborhood is more dollars than dimes, with Amanpuri and The Chedi in the foreground on Surin headland and plenty of upmarket villas leaning towards the waves.
Managing Director Wanwipa Horbut sees the 20 properties as a five-star investment in a five-star destination (slogan: ''a living work of art.'').
The one-bedroom options begin at 7.8 million baht and ascend to three bedrooms with pool for 24.8 million baht.
Such is the appeal of the Surin region that four of the five top-range pool villa options have already been sold.
The buyers are Italians, an Australian and an American, which points towards the international appeal of places on the hillside.
''It's a challenge to launch a new property project during a recession,'' Khun Wanwipa said.
''We are confident that The Quarter will continue to do well in the international marketplace.''
Prospective owners had been queuing up for The Quarter, she said, based on quality, location and pricing.
The project began in December 2007 and will be complete in October this year.
Khun Wanwipa told Phuketwan that the island retained a lot of attractions compared to other parts of the world, where prices of property had been sliding.
''Real estate here remains relatively strong because Phuket is a very appealing destination. It's still beautiful. That won't change.''
Thai design director Khamron Sutthi enjoyed the chance to see his work complete yesterday evening.
Owners on the estate have access to a meeting room with wi-fi, a spacious communal swimming pool, a fitness centre and a tennis court.
Khun Wanwipa, from a Phuket family, oversees Surin Hill Development, which has been involved with local development projects that include Baan Thai Surin Hill, Baan Thai Surin Garden, Baan Thai Surin Hill Pool Villas, and now The Quarter.
Coming next: Baan Thai Layan, across 50 rai close to Laguna Phuket, which will be rolled out in eight phases at a cost of about 1.5 billion baht.
