PHUKET officials today broke the red clouds open just a little to announce a new resort for the island - the 305-room Novotel Phuket Dahlia.
Construction will start before the end of the month, with a grand opening set for late 2011 or early 2012.
The new resort will replace the three-star Patong Bayshore, which has been a fixture in Patong for more than 20 years on Rat-U-Thit-200 Pi Road.*
Kasikorn Bank is backing the 1.5 billion baht venture by the Bayshore Wing Company.
Pobchai Jivavistnon, a member of the management team, said that his family had a good relationship with the Novotel brand.
The present Novotel Phuket, with 220 rooms, was well-known and had a good view of the whole of Patong beach. He said many guests returned and the occupancy rate was consistently high.
Free from political problems in Bangkok, Phuket would be doing very well, he said. The resorts of less than four star quality were the ones that were likely to suffer, he said.
The Bayshore closed on April 20.
An earlier version of this report put the Bayshore in the wrong location.

Oh yes, I forgot: We do not have enough rooms here. Exactly the right moment to build some more. And don't forget to have another 7-Eleven and Family Mart next to it.
