PHUKET: A new tourist attraction is emerging at a small temple in Phuket City as five artisans from China create a novel work of art.
The Shrine of the Serene Light is the work of art. Slowly, the glass and ceramic decorations are coming together beautifully.
Already tourists who happen upon the temple, tucked away in a quiet corner of old Phuket Town, are able to watch the artisans, on arches or creating decorations.
Donations have enabled the renovation at the Toaist temple, and everything should be complete for the Vegetarian Festival this year.
On the walls in the original Phuket temple are historic pictorial tiles, dating back 120 years. The shrine was built in 1889 by a Phuket Hokkien Chinese family, and being ''lost'' for more than a century has helped to preserve its charm.
The shrine can be found at the On On Hotel end of Phang Nga Road, close to the Southwind Bookshop.
