The taxi drivers' building in central Phuket is on public land

Phuket Taxi Stand Building 'on Public Roadway'

Wednesday, November 21, 2012
PHUKET: A building erected for taxi drivers in central Phuket is on public land and illegal, an inspection tour by Phuket officials was told yesterday.

The home of the ''Richmond Service'' taxi group, which has borrowed the name of a well-known Phuket property developer, sits outside the Residence Resort and Spa in Cherng Talay.

Surachai Patan, the owner of nearby land, told Vice Governor Somkiet Sangkaosutthirak he had been complaining about the building since it was erected in 2009.

When Vice Governor Somkiet knocked on the door of the building yesterday, there was no answer, although some taxi drivers were in a kitchen at the rear.

Among other officials making a tour yesterday were Cherng Talay Mayor Ma-Ann Samran, local village chief Kittiwut Saman and Pipob Sudkhaow, the Permanent Secretary of Thalang District.

Nobody was able to explain who had built the building or where the money came from. Some of the taxis operating from the stand appear to be illegal.

Officials plan to negotiate with the taxi driver group leader ''Tiger'' and others to have the taxi rank based somewhere else so the building can be demolished.

Nothing to negotiate about, just bulldoze it down. It's illegal simple is that.

Negotiate? That's where all the problems come from! btw, on every road there is public land occupied. All extension of shops and houses to the roadside are a possible threat. It could be off simple help, to watch the position of the electric poles. In case, they are inside the 'private property' something must be wrong. Maybe sometimes it's the position of the poles, but mostly....!

I feel its sad that authorities do nothing... even when people complain about this illegal structure!
Its sad that 'illegal' issues have to be 'negotiated'!

I feel that the only solution our authorities come up with when dealing with 'illegal' issues is simply making those 'illegal' issues 'legal' (Sample: jet-ski, taxis, airport taxi's, etc. etc.)

These "structures" are all over Phuket on appropriated public land. Taxis are untouchable.

As they sell tours, do they have a TAT license to do it?

I agree with Nick. Public land = illegal, therfore bulldoze building and taxis at same time. No negotiation

Taxi stand in the roadway? So what.

Take a 5 minute look around and you will see all kinds of illegal businesses ripping off tourists in the roadway - or - you can visit one of the National Parks filled with hotels built on 'protected' land.

Nothing surprises me here anymore - a lawless, gun-toting society eagerly awaiting high season, so the tuk-tuk mobsters and jet ski ripoffs can take as many tourists dollars as possible.

That is, if the beachgoers don't get run over by a speedboat first.

@ William: 'awaiting high season' - I was on Phuket from 04-20 November & everyone was scratching their heads asking where is 'high season'? Apart form the beer bottle toting Russians meandering around, not much evidence that 'high season' had commenced. Very much changed days! Maybe the penny will eventually drop, Phuket is simply not as attractive as it once was - for the many reasons stated over past months: high pricing, aggressive behaviors, reduced scenery & 'graying' beaches.

so what...really not a big deal...there is probably not one building in Thailand which is 100% in compliance with its permits and licenses (if any)...we should not try to make a scandal out of each and every incident which ultimately relates to land or its development...getting a bit boring...many other interesting things to write and read about...Phuket is so much more than this.
