PHUKET: The spa brand that had its beginnings on Phuket almost two decades ago now shines on South East Asia's most modern landmark.
Singapore's first Banyan Tree Spa sits on the 55th level of the Marina Bay Sands.
Phuket's Banyan Tree brand is likely to be enthusiastically embraced by the region's financial, shopping and gambling city hub.
''After spending the last 17 years establishing 64 spas in 26 countries, Banyan Tree is finally returning to its roots in Singapore,'' said Banyan Tree brand pioneer Ho Kwon Ping, who with his brother first saw Phuket's potential and founded Laguna Phuket in 1987. The Banyan Tree brand emerged on Phuket in 1994.
The Banyan Tree Holdings Executive Chairman said: ''We are bringing the best of the Banyan Tree Spa experience to our home ground, and proud to have the stunning location of Marina Bay Sands to plant our first flag.''
Perhaps fresh from a phrase-inducing massage, Marina Bay Sands Interim CEO George Tanasijevich said: ''We aim to make Singapore proud by opening the city's first-ever Banyan Tree Spa at the height of nearly 200 metres in the sky, and welcome Singaporeans to visit this spectacular spa.''
According to publicists, the new spa ''infuses the sleek glamor of its modern interior with Banyan Tree's tradition of staging sensual Asian-inspired experience to exude a unique sense of place.
''Themed on the Tree of Life design, the 1213 square metres urban spa offers its suite of distinctive treatments in 15 uniquely designed rooms with panoramic views.''
KP Ho, a veteran of many openings down the decades at the seven-resort Laguna Phuket, enthused: ''This opening is a key milestone in the history of Banyan Tree.
''We are confident that our presence will elevate the standards of spa services in Singapore to another level, and exceed our clients' expectations.''
The distinctive Marina Bay Sands opened in Singapore last year and incorporates one of two casinos that are credited with boosting tourism in the island nation.
Visitors and residents on Phuket can have a Banyan Tree treatment without having to catch an elevator - and see the original ''tree of life'' on the way in.
