ABOUT 100 sea gypsies from Koh Sireh protested outside Provincial Hall in Phuket City yesterday in a property dispute over land set aside for a much-praised local museum.
The Ku Kak La Vo museum is to be built at a cost of four million baht near the sea gypsy village on Koh Sireh, an island linked to Phuket by a road bridge.
Regarded as ''The best designed local museum in South-East Asia,'' the project had the support of former Governor Wichai Praisa-ngob.
However, the Bangkok resident who owns part of the 10 rai set aside for the project has now used barbed wire to fence off what is claimed to be a section of private land.
Sea gypsy leader Suthorn Pramongkit and about 100 Koh Sireh villagers presented a letter to Vice Governor Niwit Aroonrat asking him to clarify ownership in the real estate rumble.
Today, Vice Governor Niwit asked the Land Titles Office on Phuket to investigate the deeds of the slice of land that appears to be privately owned.
Other disputes have interfered with museums and memorials in the past, most notably north of Phang Nga in Khao Lak where a private owner fenced off land near the tsunami memorial patrol boat that washed inland in 2004.
