Phuket Raiders Arrest Two on Patong Property Above 80 Metres

Thursday, May 16, 2013
PHUKET: Two arrests have been made in the hills above Patong as Kathu officials continue a campaign on Phuket against illegal property developments and spurious claims of real estate ownership.

Arrested last night in a raid by the Director of Kathu District, Veera Kerdsirimongkol, were Pichit Sitaruno, 54, owner of a backhoe, and Polypraput Jansatja, who says she has land titles to 37 rai in the hills above Patong.

The driver of the backhoe fled and escaped immediate arrest.

Officials believe the work they stopped last night off Harsipbee Road was taking place above the 80 metre limit, where all construction is banned on Phuket.

They also plan to investigate Khun Polypraput's claim to genuine land ownership.

Both those arrested were taken into custody for further questioning.

The previous night, the owner of another property - this time in the Kamala Hills between Kamala and Nakalay - was also taken in for questioning.

A quantity of timber that appeared to have been cut from protected hardwood was handed over to officials from the Forests department.

It's good to know things are happening (no matter what the outcome will be) but what do they do with the Timber already cut?
Sell it? Keep it? Burn it?

I'm sure many of us could point out properties being built above 80M. I just noticed one up from me opposite the No. 6 Restaurant in the hills above N. Patong. It's not hard to find them.

If you can prove you already had a building erected at a site higher than 80m from MSL before the law came into effect (Can't remember when but I think it was 1992) then you are allowed to renovate or rebuild that house and continue living at the site.

Thus not all existing buildings above 80m are illegal.
