BACK to the drawing board goes the Explorer project, which was to occupy a prime location near Laguna Phuket and involve a large investment in Phuket property.
In its place comes The Odyssey, a fresh project that has yet to be formally announced but which was confirmed to us by design house A49, where a contact today said words to the effect: ''That's still being worked on. It's supposed to be a secret. I can't say anything.''
Word about the change came today from Phuket property insider Bill Barnett. He said on his online site that The Odyssey planned a Q3 launch, and included are 260 luxury apartments with two, three and four bedroom configurations.
''Building heights will be 23 meters (seven stories) with swimming pools on the top of each structure,'' Mr Barnett writes, while ''unit areas range from 140 square meters up to 325 square meter for the 44 penthouses with their own plunge pools.''
Phuketwan revealed the Explorer project exclusively early in 2010 then had to quietly drop the article to protect a source from getting into trouble.
We await word on the relaunch from a new marketing operation, but a mix of quality retail and residential on this 57-rai slice of real estate so close to Laguna Phuket seems a no brainer to succeed.
Here's what was said in a media release about the Explorer back in July last year:
The Explorer will be bringing together exclusive retail brands alongside stunning sea-view residences.
Discover decadent designs, world-class brands and the finest foods at The Explorer Plaza. Escape Phuket's rays with an iced latte in the cool surroundings of this retail gem.
Phuket residents will delight in the opportunity to shop locally for a chilled bottle of white or some fresh olives without having to travel far. On site parking, walkways and multiple storey outlets offer a long-waited retail respite in this area.
The Explorer now invites brands to join them at this prime location to fulfill the shopping needs of those seeking quality retail in a locale already home to discerning guests and residents.
Explore Residential. Sea-view condominiums located on one of Phuket's last remaining prime spots with breathtaking views over Bang Tao beach.
Enjoy the same spectacular sunsets viewed by Laguna Phuket resort guests, where vivid reds light up the sky over the Andaman.
For those seeking something more spacious, a pool villa could fit the bill, single-storey villas with two bedrooms or double-storey villas featuring three bedrooms, and both with parking and maid's quarters.
The spectacular double-storey residences host a magnificent master bedroom and Jacuzzi on the second floor while penthouse condominiums boast roof pools. An on-site clubhouse will take care of residents' leisure needs.
The complex will enjoy high traffic from guests staying at the Laguna Phuket resorts and other exclusive hotels located in the nearby Surin vicinity, supported by the large number of expatriate and local residents living in this area.
The Explorer comprises 31 plaza (retail) units, 78 villas and 156 condominiums. All plaza units are currently under construction with completion scheduled for July 2011. First phase completion of the residential units is scheduled for July 2012.
Plaza units are now available from 15 million baht and The Explorer welcomes those seeking a retail spot in one of Phuket's most premium areas to contact sole agent, SEA Property International.

Editor, you would have to be the only person thinking any form of Phuket property is a "no brainer to succeed". The www.phuketinsider.com recently covered a report from CBRE saying Phuket property is currently a disaster.
