THE CONSTRUCTION of another new hotel is to be announced today on Phuket. The BayCliff Hotel will consist of 241 rooms in the heart of Patong . . . on land leased long-term from the Phuket Provincial Electricity Authority.
The deal indicates that the price of land along Phuket's coast and in Patong has soared to heights that make long-term leasing viable. Precise terms of the deal will be revealed at a media conference today.
The site is on Rat-U-Thit 200 Pi Road, not far from the Jungceylon lifestyle centre.
Construction will begin next year, after today's public signing of a long-term lease.
The Thai owner of the planned hotel also operates the Bay Cliff Patong and the the Privilege@Baycliff Patong, both at Kalim Bay, north of downtown Patong.
The Baycliff undertaking comes amid a recovery from economic and political setbacks that is still a work in progress for Phuket. While tourist arrivals are improving, the numbers fall short of the record high season of 2007-2008.
Resort developers have reacted in different ways to an uncertain 2010. Some have cancelled or delayed projects while others are proceeding and are positve about the outcome.
