EMERGENCY chiefs on Phuket fear more landslips and mudslides of the kind that killed two workers at Patong last weekend - and they have produced a frightening photo album of risky property on hillsides to demonstrate the dangers.
Phuket Governor Wichai Praisa-ngob's special committee on the environment toured steep sites around Phuket on Monday and yesterday met to show their photos to the head of the Natural Resources and Environment Phuket office, Ong-art Chanachanmongkol.
One site, The View, near the Karon viewpoint, was exceptionally dangerous, the comittee was told by a land surveyor from the Phuket Geology office, because it consisted of soil and sand without any rocks beneath.
Khun Ong-art was told that greater effort was needed to ensure safety standards on hillside building sites.
''This project is very high as well,'' the surveyor said. ''Even if it is under 80 metres, it still represents a potential threat to the main Patak Road directly below it.''
Deep pylons to 32 metres were essential for all construction on the hills of Phuket because the entire region was in a zone where earthquakes were possible at any time, the meeting was told. Jungceylon is a good example, he said, where soft rock was discovered under the construction site, and the builders opted to increase the depth of foundation pylons to 30 metres.
''Safety of the occupants must come first,'' said the land surveyor.
The committee considered 24 new building projects for Phuket and decided that they all needed closer inspection.
At Nai Harn, already under construction on a hillside beside the lagoon is a 204-room venue, the At Nai Harn Resort.
