WILL Phuket's Heroines be given their marching orders? Or will they continue to be besieged by Phuket traffic, some of it slow-moving, for decades to come?
About 40 architects gathered on the island from all over Thailand this week to brainstorm ideal solutions to future planning for the Heroines Monument and the surrounding public land.
Their priority is a 300 million baht Thalang Historical Park, which would be situated on 96 rai of public land, between the Thalang intersection north of the Heroines and Laguna Phuket to the west.
Water buffaloes now roam across this stretch, which is near the Phuket One real estate office. Yet historically, it's where the two sisters fought and beat the Burmese invaders, Ko Chana Suk Pama.
The arrival of the architects represented the first phase in development of the Thalang Historical Park, which is almost certain to celebrate the deeds of the sisters.
Expect to see a recreation of the battle scene, with life-size men (and women dressed as men) engaged in combat. It should be an appealing year-round addition to Phuket's rapidly growing tourist attractions.
The architects came at the invitation of Achijima Hukong, chief of the Thalang Museum, just across the road towards Pa Klok from the Heroines.
Kampon Skuljan, president of the cultural committee for Thalang sub-district, helped to organise the trip.
Expect to see the buffaloes moved to make way for the recreations of battle scenes sometime soon.
Debate still continues about the future of the Heroines Monument. The likelihood is that they will eventually be moved aside, to be replaced by traffic lights.
But they would probably be more accessible and just as highly-regarded off to one side.
