Phuket Families Face Mass Eviction in Property Dispute

Friday, January 20, 2012
PHUKET: About 3000 families would be forced from their homes under a bid by a claimant to ownership of 300 rai of land in Phuket City, a meeting heard yesterday.

The families occupy the property in the King Kaew Moo 3 section of the Rassada sub-district, and their representatives met with officials at Provincial Hall in Phuket City.

The people who now occupy the property are seeking the help of the Damrungtam Office, which deals with complaints much as an Ombudsman's office does in Europe.

The claim to the land goes back 50 years to a person who is now long dead, but unnamed relatives have decided now to actively pursue what they say is a legitimate title.

Officers from the Phuket Land Titles Office were at yesterday's meeting. The first step in assessing whether the families have to move on will be taken by compiling an accurate list of who occupies what parts of the disputed property.
